Born to Barney and Voila Schultz in La Grange, Texas, David grew up playing every sport offered at his high school. After graduating, he married Blanche Milton and moved to Houston, where he began his career in medical technology and started his family. He later earned a BA in Finance from the University of Texas at Dallas.
In 1988, David moved to Austin to serve as President of Clinical Pathology Laboratories, Inc. (CPL). Under his leadership, CPL grew from a small local Austin laboratory into the third-largest laboratory in the United States.
David retired in 2012 and married Judy. Together, they built a life filled with love, travel, golf, and joyful family time. Summers were spent at the lake with family and friends, making memories and watching sunrises. David loved sharing experiences with those he cared about and creating moments that would last a lifetime. David and Judy explored more than 50 countries and 48 states. When asked about his favorite vacation, he would say—without hesitation—an African safari, with Italy being his favorite country to visit.
Life at home in Austin was centered around David’s favorite sport, his hobbies, and his friends. Most days, he could be found golfing on his home course with Judy and friends. At home, he built his woodshop where he crafted beautiful gifts on his lathe for those he loved. If there was a Longhorn football game in town, David was there cheering on his team. A gracious host, he always made family and friends feel special when they visited. Every afternoon at 4 p.m., David took time to unwind with his favorite Scotch. Most evenings ended with David as chef or sous-chef, working side by side with Judy.
David is survived by his wife, Judy Schultz; daughter Christine Salsbury and husband Doug; son David Wade Schultz and wife Rebecca; grandchildren Sydney and Braden; stepchildren Khristoper Franklin, Dillon Denney, and Kara Denney and her wife Sarah Hoffman; sister Karen Wendler; and many nieces and nephews.
David is preceded in death by his parents and his sister Verlene Zbranek.
