I was fortunate to have worked with Dave at Santa Fe for six years.  Dave was a great mentor who treated everyone with respect and humility.  I learned a great deal from Dave, John Syapin and Dick Thompson while at Santa Fe.  Dave had a vast understanding of finance and the petroleum industry;  most of all he was a genuine person.   The business world could use many more like him

I enjoyed working with Dave at Santa Fe during his later years as CFO. He always was a gentleman and a "straight shooter." 


Dave welcomed me, a young attorney, to the Company with enthusiasm. He seemed to be grateful for my assistance whenever I participated in financial transactions. He and Margie were both very gracious to me at Santa Fe social functions, including parties at their home.

My fondest memory of Dave occurred near the end of his career. His retirement had been announced and his successor CFO was designated. The business was in the tank and the "wiz kids" in the finance group worked with investment bankers to devise a financing scheme involving leveraged leases on new offshore rigs. The concept was that the investors (cum lenders) could use the investment tax credits and accelerated depreciation and give Santa Fe effective near zero financing that would enable the Company to earn a nice spread by investing the proceeds in treasury bonds (which never happened as the funds were otherwise used). Drilling Division President Clyde Dawson was not an advocate, calling it the "never-never plan" (we never owned the rigs and never finished paying for them!).

Anyway, a bunch of us traveled to New York to negotiate the deal. Dave came along as an overseer, to see how the new financial team handled themselves. 

After a long day of meetings with lawyers and bankers, we all went to dinner at an Italian restaurant. We then loaded into taxis and Dave joined Santa Fe's Milt Bracken and me. As we approached our hotel, I asked Milt if he wanted to go bar hoping and check-out the street scene.  Milt said "yes" and Dave asked "may I join you?"  Well, the three of us gallivanted off and had a fun evening.

This long story illustrates what a great man Dave was. He had a zest for life and wanted to join us youngsters for a night on the town! Dave certainly was "young at heart."

Our heartfelt condolences go out to Dave's family.  My he Rest In Peace!





Sunday, Charles went out to sweep our walk and picked up a LA Times paper left in the alley. Strange we don't get the Times. He brought it in the house and  was browsing though the various sections and turning to the last section 'Obituary', which we never look at, was shocked to see Dave West's picture and name ! That was such a coincidence.  
We have known Dave for over 75 years  & all through High School .  Our Senior year Dave was Student Body Vice President & Betty was Secretary.  We both were at Marge & Dave Wedding and knew both their parents.  Charles was a year ahead at Montebello and we have been great friends throughout these many years.  Charles as an Architect did homes for Dave & Marge. Betty has known Marge since about the 6th or 7th grade, lots of good memories and laughs.  We have been blessed with Dave & Marge's wonderful friendship through school, WW2, and life.  Dave will be missed  by Betty & I.

I heard from Charles Banks that Dave had passed. So many memories of years ago.
In school, Marge was always one of my best friends. We had our Sub-Deb group so man fun times. So sorry to hear about Dave, he was a good friend too~  We did lose touch after they moved, but still remember the good times.     



Hello Marge and Family,  How well I remember Dave's kindness to me after Wayne passed away. Dave helped me with settling our finances and even visited the banks with me to see that everything was being handled properly.  My family and I appreciated Dave's efforts so very much. I was saddened to learn of Dave's passing. I enjoyed working with him in my early Santa Fe years.

My favorite recollection of Dave occurred during his last few months as CFO. The wiz-kids went for a creative leveraged lease rig financing arrangement and a bunch of us were in New York to negotiate the deal. Dave was primarily an observer and their must have been over a dozen lawyers involved (ugh). Yeah, I was one of 'em.

After a long day and a long dinner, we loaded into taxis and Dave joined Milt Bracken and me. As we approached the hotel, I said to Milt "let's go hit a bar and check out the street action." Dave asked "may I come along."

He was a great man  - RIP.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.



Dave was a very special person.  I am so happy that I have winderful memories of  shared times with him & Marge.



We are proud to have served at Santa Fe under Dave's direction.  He was always respectful and a pleasure to deal with.  May he rest in  peace.
