Originally from Minneapolis, Diane earned a Bachelor of Science degree from The University of Minnesota and later a Master’s in Education from Texas Woman’s University. She dedicated nearly 20 years to teaching middle school language arts, where her gift for connecting with young minds and hearts made her a beloved educator. Her students often remembered her not just for her lessons, but for the kindness, respect, and encouragement she offered during a formative time in their lives. She retired from Lake Travis ISD in 2013.
Diane’s life was rich with passions — she loved cooking, solving jigsaw puzzles, working out, swimming, traveling, and spending time in the Colorado mountains. A voracious reader and active member of several book clubs, she found joy in stories and ideas. Through many relocations for her husband’s career, Diane built warm and welcoming homes and cultivated lifelong friendships across North America.
But above all, Diane’s greatest joy and deepest love was for her family. She was a devoted wife, a nurturing mother, and a proud grandmother. Her love for her children was unwavering and her heart expanded even more with the arrival of her five granddaughters who brought her endless delight. Diane was their biggest cheerleader, always present with a listening ear, a warm hug, and words of wisdom. Her legacy lives on in the values she instilled and the love she gave so freely.
Diane is preceded in death by her parents Palmer and Olive Nielsen; brothers Jeffrey and Darrell; sister Beverly Prestholdt; son Michael; and daughter-in-law Kristi Nordstrom.
She is survived by her loving husband of 54 years Del; daughter Amy (Kim) Nordstrom of Shaker Heights, OH; son David Nordstrom (Emily) of Austin, TX; brother Scott Nielsen of Minneapolis, MN; her five adoring granddaughters Olivia, Heidi, Lillian, Ella and Elizabeth; and many nieces and nephews.
In keeping with Diane’s wishes, there will be no traditional funeral or memorial service. Instead, her family will gather in Breckenridge, Colorado, for a private remembrance along her favorite mountain hiking trail — a place that brought her peace and joy.
Memorial gifts in Diane’s honor may be made to The Oncology Nursing Foundation. Donations will support the Ann Olson Scholarship Fund, helping oncology nurses pursue higher education. Online at: n.ons.org/memorial — please select “Ann Olson Scholarship” as the Fund Designation.
