

Doris Carter Doris Carter, loving wife, doting mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, faithful friend, honest and fun loving human being, died on April 22, 2004. Born September 28, 1914, in Italy, Texas, to her beloved parents, Mr. and Mrs. David D.B. Walker. She was educated at Hillsboro High School, where she was a cheerleader. She then attended Hillsboro Junior College. Later she earned over 100 credit hours in psychology at the University of Texas. She continued to update her education for 23 years in the Continuing Education Program at the University of Texas. In addition, she attended the School of Alcoholic Studies at Rutgers University for one year. She married Fred Carter on January 1, 1940. He was the love of her life. They were a married team who gave much of their lives to helping other families and who inspired many other couples. Doris said that the happiest times of her life were just with him. Fred died on February 14, 1988. Doris was a tireless pioneer in Texas regarding the counseling and treatment of alcoholics and their families. She was supervisor of alcoholic counseling at the Texas Department of Health and Retardation, where she worked from 1960 until her retirement in 1976. She initiated and orchestrated the first meeting in the state to determine certification requirements for counselors of alcoholism on July 17, 1975. She and a colleague received the first two state certifications for alcoholism counseling in February 1976. The event was televised in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. As a recovered alcoholic she remained sober from January 1, 1956 until her death. Her involvement with the fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous is legendary. She served as the group secretary in the Old Austin Group for 11 years. She served in every capacity within the fellowship including southwest delegate from 1970-1971. The devotion to A.A. and other alcoholic families defined her life and a tremendous void will be felt by legions of friends in the fellowship. Her husband, Fred, son James Walker Carter, father, mother and brother, James preceded her in death. She is survived by her daughter Kay Jackson, grandchildren Angela Olson and husband Tad, Jay Jackson and wife Teresa, great grandchildren, Carter Olson, Cassandra Olson, Cole Olson, Cody Olson, Hannah Jackson, Jodi Jackson, and John Jackson. She is also survived by her brother David Walker and wife Sue and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6:00 8:00 p.m., Saturday, April 24, 2004 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home. Services celebrating her life will be held at Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel, at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, April 25, 2004. Interment will follow at Lytton Springs Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Lee Adkinson, Jim Jarvis, Dale Fetter, Charles Clark, Danny Spivey and Russell Claybrook. Honorary pallbearers will be Robbie Scott, John McCready, Terry Bonds, C.W.
