Dorothea Blum, devoted daughter, sister and aunt, passed away on December 9 at the age of 91. Born in 1923 to her parents Carl F. Blum and Barbara E. Mann Blum, Dorothea lived in the Blum family home on Avenue F in North Austin for over 60 years. She then lived at the French Quarter Apartments and Pavilion at Great Hills.
She graduated from Austin High School in 1941. Soon after, she started work as a telephone operator at Bell Telephone Company. She was later promoted into administrative jobs and worked there until retiring from the company in 1988. Never married, Dorothea was a devoted family member. She doted on several of her nieces and nephews as though they were her own children. A loving and happy person, she was an ever cheerful and loyal friend to many people over her lifetime. A lover of cats, her feline pets were dear company in her years living alone. She was a lifelong fan of Texas Longhorn sports, and closely followed the progress of Longhorn teams over the decades.
Dorothea is predeceased by her siblings Claudia Sallis of Dallas and Freddie Blum, Helen Bates, Carl Blum, Jr. and Nancy Blum, all of Austin.
She is survived by nieces and nephews living in Texas and California.
A private Chapel service was held at the Cook-Walden Funeral Home on Friday, December 12, and she was buried at Austin Memorial Cemetery with her family, including her parents and her mother’s parents (Mr and Mrs. Charles Mann).
