Dorothy Garner "Mimi" Wallace, 90, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, April 28, 2012. Dorothy was born on February 20, 1922, in Woodward, Oklahoma to Esther Holt Garner and Daniel David Garner. She was the third of ten children.
Dorothy always said she got to Texas as fast as she could, arriving in Jacksboro, Texas within weeks of her birth. She married Cal T. Wallace on December 6, 1941, and moved to Austin a few years later.
Dorothy worked tirelessly throughout her life, not only as a mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and cousin, but also in helping make Austin the great city it is today. In a time when women generally didn't have important, lucrative jobs, she decided to become a realtor. She was a proud member of the Austin Board of Realtors for 44 years. She was honored as Realtor of the Year in 1975, served as President of the Women's Council of Realtors and was elected President of the Board of Realtors in 1979. Dorothy enjoyed the respect of her peers in the business community for her hard work and leadership. One of her great accomplishments that all Austinites can enjoy is the Town Lake Gazebo (1970) which she helped build while a member of the Austin Women in Construction. Dorothy was dedicated to a number of other great organizations, including Executive Women International, Pilot Club of Austin, the Austin Desk and Derrick Club and University Christian Church. She was also an avid fan of Texas Longhorn Football.
Dorothy is reunited in heaven with her husband Cal T. "Aggie" Wallace, her mother Esther Holt Garner and father Daniel David Garner, her sisters Eloise Garner McFarland, Anne Martin Hodge, and Margaret Garner Van Wormer, and brothers Jack Holt Garner, William Robert Garner and Daniel David Garner, Jr.
Surviving family members include her sister Joyce Garner Wendt, brothers Albert Lee Garner (Anne), James Andrew Garner (Aileen) and sisters-in-law Mary Sue Garner and Elizabeth Garner, daughter Janet Wallace Jones (Al), and son C. Rad Wallace (Donna), grandchildren Tracy Wallace Brown (Brian), Allison Jones Webster (Rob), Amanda Wallace and Radford Wallace, great-grandchildren Samantha and Will Brown, Christian Regini, Elizabeth and George Webster, and Abigail Wallace, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
After living in Austin for more than fifty years, Dorothy moved to Corpus Christi, where she has resided the last eight years. Her family would like to thank all of her friends and companions at Trinity Towers, as well as her wonderful Home Instead caregivers.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 2nd with funeral services beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, North Lamar. Interment will follow at Austin Memorial Park.
