

Douglas Garland Brookins was born July 28, 1924 in Terral, Oklahoma to Hosea Lee Brookins and Lillian Williams Brookins. Doug's body gave up the fight after a courageous battle with numerous complications created by Myleodysplastic Syndrome. His clock stopped on Sept. 2, 2009 at approximately 2:10 A.M. Preceding him in death were his parents and first wife, Frances Stimson Brookins. Spouse Frances A. Brookins, sons Steven, David, Kent Brookins, their wives and children, survive him. His stepchildren included Karen Brown Laine, Kevin E. and Kyle E. Brown. Doug passionately loved his eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. His brothers Don and B.F. Brookins and their families further survive him. During World War II, Douglas proudly served in the U. S. Navy aboard the Destroyer U.S.S. Benner in the South Pacific. He was a Petty Officer in the Public Relations Office for Admiral "Bull" Halsey in Noumea, New Caledonia. He further served temporary duty at Coley Pint on Guadalcanal in Solomon Islands. After graduating from the University of Oklahoma in 1950 with a degree in Petroleum Geology, Doug went on active duty with the U.S. Navy, attending officer candidate school in New Port, RI. Doug's first job after military service was in sales with Remington Rand in Dallas, TX. He then went to St. Louis, MO in 1967 as branch manager and on to Sperry Remington World Headquarters in Blue Bell, PA in 1970. In 1973 he purchased the Remington Rand branch in Austin TX and began his own business, REMCO Office Products. Eventually, Audio Optical Systems of Austin was formed to provide sales and support of Kurzweil Software for Special Needs students in six states. Doug loved to travel, sail, collect antique clocks, and visit with his grandchildren. Though he enjoyed membership in the University of Texas Club, he also liked watching the Longhorns get defeated regularly by OU. He was an inactive ordained deacon at Highland Park Baptist church and loved going to Men's Prayer Breakfast. Douglas will lie in state at Weed-Corley Fish Funeral Home at 3125 N. Lamar on Friday, September 4th from 10:00am to 7:00pm. Memorial services will be held Saturday, September 5, 2009 at Highland Park Baptist Church, 5206 Balcones Dr., Austin TX 78731. Visitation with the family and friends at the church will begin at 12:30pm, with memorial services starting at 1:30. Interment will follow at Austin Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Hospice Austin, or the charity of your choice.
