Dr. Stanton Woodside Glazener, 84, passed away Wednesday, July 9, 2014, at the Retirement and Nursing Center in Austin, Texas. Family, friends, and acquaintances will long remember Dr. Glazener for his compassion as a physician; his dedication as a husband, father and grandfather; and his enjoyment of life which he shared with frankness and humor.
Dr. Glazener was born in Big Spring, Texas, on Dec. 14, 1929, the only child of Wm. Caleb Glazener and Willa (Woodside) Glazener. His early childhood was spent in Stanton, Texas, where his parents were educators; however, he also lived in College Station, Victoria, and Falfurrias, before moving to Austin, where he graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in 1948. Dr. Glazener attended Lamar Junior College (1950), the University of Texas at Austin (1953), and medical school at UT Galveston (1959) where he specialized in Internal Medicine.
In 1952, Dr. Glazener married his high school sweetheart, Margaret Rupp, in Falfurrias, Texas, where they had first met. After medical school Dr Glazener served two years in the U.S. Air Force, in Roswell, NM, before moving to Austin in 1961 to practice medicine and raise a family. In 1976, he established his own private practice on W. 34th St., where he worked until his retirement in 1989. Dr. Glazener was a physician of the "old school" style, willing to be called out at any hour of the day or night and making house calls long after many in the profession had discontinued the practice. His style was earnest, personal, and no doubt often attended by the humor and dry wit that was his hallmark. Upon retiring, Dr. Glazener and his wife, Maggie, spent much of their time at their lake house on Lake Travis, sharing hobbies and interests such as landscaping, sailing, nature-watching, and sharing good times with family and friends. They also traveled to England and made frequent trips to visit family near and far.
Dr. Glazener was a student of life, a notable story teller, and a man of many talents and interests. He loved art: appreciating the work of others as well as trying his own hand in a variety of mediums. He loved music and had an eclectic taste that ranged from the Beetles to bluegrass, classical opera to Edith Piaf. He had a passion for books and enjoyed movies of all kinds. He was an early “foodie”, taking up gourmet cooking as a hobby back in the 1970's, and enjoyed nothing better than planning for, cooking, and serving a delicious meal to family and friends. He was the consummate planner for any of his undertakings, whether it was the itinerary for a family vacation or the shopping list for a holiday meal. Last, but not least, he was an avid football fan, having played football himself both in high school and at Lamar Jr. College. He was a loyal UT football fan, living on Tower Drive with a view of the UT tower during the last decades of his life.
Dr. Glazener is survived by: Margaret (Maggie) Glazener, his wife of 62 years; daughter, Linda James of Houston; daughter, Karen Kremer and son-in-law, Charles Kremer of Cherry Valley, NY; daughter, Lisa Doerr and son-in-law, Steve Doerr of Albuquerque, NM; son, Dr. Wesley Glazener and daughter-in-law, Catherine Glazener of Austin; and ten grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, July 14, 2014 at University Baptist Church, 2130 Guadalupe Street.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the University Baptist Church, Hospice Austin or the Capital Area Parkinson's Society.
