Edgar Lynn Scott died December 23, 2011, only weeks after being diagnosed with cancer. He is survived by his children Debra, Don, and Danny; as well as nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren and his sister Lera Nell England.
Lynn's early life was spent in and around McKinney, Texas, where he went to high school. He was a popular, straight-A student and football star. During summers he helped out with his father's trucking business, worked in a cotton gin, and held other hardscrabble jobs during WWII.
At 18, Lynn joined the Marines and headed to Camp Pendleton in San Diego, where he began to see the world beyond North Texas. He served in the Korean War, followed by many years in the reserves, and left the Marines as a Gunnery Sergeant.
In 1952, Lynn married Ruby Britton, a high school sweetheart, beauty queen, and co-ed at North Texas State. Their early years were spent in San Angelo where Lynn worked in the financial services industry.
After landing a job as a bank examiner for the state, Lynn moved his family to Dallas. After being recruited by the Consumer Credit Commission, he moved his family to Austin in 1967. Lynn reached the pinnacle of his career when he was appointed to run his agency as the Deputy Commissioner.
The additional leisure his new job afforded him allowed Lynn more time to pursue his life-long avocations. His love of golf evolved into a passion, which he pursued until the final weeks of his life. During the decades spent mastering this sport, he accumulated countless friends, victories, and happy moments that comprised a joyful life.
Lynn was also an avid outdoorsman. Whether it be for deer, elk, turkey, or javelina, Lynn was always eager to pursue his trophy, while enduring the elements and enjoying the camaraderie of his friends.
Another passion of Lynn's was horses. In the 60's he introduced his family to riding and purchased a quarter horse named Skeeter, the granddaughter of the Lone Ranger's horse Silver. The stables offered the kids, not only the pleasures of riding, but also fishing, hunting, camping, and a refuge from urban life.
Ruby died in 2008. Lynn was by her side every day until she passed away. Between the time of her death and his, Lynn was healthy, active, and happy. He was taken from us suddenly. We all expected Dad to live a very long life, like his mother who lived to 105. But God decided otherwise. His family and friends mourn his passing but delight in his memory.
The funeral will be Thursday, December 29, 2011, 2:00 p.m., at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 N. Lamar Blvd., Austin, Texas. Burial will follow at Austin Memorial Park.
