Edith Louise Karr Hixson (Edie), age 85, passed away on Thursday, December 11th, 2025. Edie was preceded in death by her daughter, Stephanie Hixson. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, James and her son Kevin, his wife Sandra and their three boys, Conner, Colton, and Caden
Edie was a long-time resident of Lake Charles, LA. She was born on September 7, 1940, to Olin (Odie) Karr and Frances Karr in Amarillo, TX. She was number 4 among 6 children. Her siblings include Carter, Robert (Bud), Carolyn, David, and Ted.
In 1959, Edie’s family moved to Lake Charles, LA, where she got a job as a secretary working at Magnolia Life Insurance. It was there she met James Hixson III. James and Edie were married on September 1st, 1962. They lived in Dallas while James was attending mortuary school. After James finished mortuary school, they returned to Lake Charles. On January 17th, 1967, their family grew to include their son, Kevin Edmond Hixson. Approximately two and a half years later their family grew again with the birth of their daughter Stephanie Camille Hixson on October 11th, 1969.
While Edie was a full-time mom, she also enjoyed painting, quilting, and needlepointing. She also enjoyed shopping for antiques. She and James took numerous trips to the world’s largest flea market in Canton, TX. They were able to take many other trips as well. Some of the more memorable include Yellowstone National Park, San Francisco, Carlsbad Caverns, Scotland, and England.
For those who knew Edie, the most frequent word used to describe her was “kind”. Other words used to describe Edie were, sweet, loving, and caring. It was these traits that led Edie to be a very involved member of First Baptist Church of Lake Charles. Whenever there was a committee in need of new members, Edie usually volunteered to serve. Some of her favorites were the annual Christmas pageant where she would help with costumes, setting, and other production needs. She also served on the Women’s Missionary Union (WMU) and Vacation Bible School.
During the night of August 26th and 27th, 2020 Hurricane Laura came ashore and destroyed everything James and Edie had built of their life in Lake Charles. Within a few days, they relocated to the Austin, TX area to be closer to their son, Kevin and other family members.
