Beloved father, grandfather and friend, left this world peacefully on Tuesday, October, 2nd, 2018.
Edwin was born in his grandparents’ home on Speedway in Austin on April 26, 1928. He was born to Grace and Edwin Goodwin, Sr.
Edwin graduated from Austin High School and attended the University of Texas where he studied art. Afterwards, he proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1946 to 1948 and again from 1950 to 1952, when he fought in the Korean War. He was a Signalman First Class and his ship was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation. After returning to Austin, Edwin began a 31-year career at the Austin Fire Department. During his last 10 years, he served as Battalion Chief. He made many lifelong friendships at the AFD.
During his early days as a firefighter, Edwin went on a blind date with Patty Jane Maynard. They were eventually married and went on to start a family and a happy life together. His grandchildren were his greatest joy.
He was a member of the Waterloo Watercolor Group and the Austin Runners Club. In addition to his love for painting, he was an avid runner, finishing many races such as the Capitol 10K.
Edwin, “Papa” to his grandchildren and “Bubba” too many others, was so very loved by all of his family and many friends. He was a big part of life at Englewood Estates, where he lived for several years. During the last few years, he was so blessed to have the constant care and support of his caregivers, Sandra Latimer and Samantha Reyes. Also, Pat, Shannon, Darcie, John, Crystal, and Mary from Compassionate Care were so wonderful and a blessing to him and his family.
Edwin was preceded in death by his only wife, Patty Goodwin, and sister, Mary Jane Boatright. He is survived by his son Christopher Baker and daughter-in-law Maralinda; daughter Lisa Bolton and son-in-law Michael; daughter Gail Acree; and grandchildren Meredith Meisetschlaeger, Maddi Bolton, Austin Goodwin, Brett Baker, Lauren Baker and Breezy Bolton.
Services will be held at 2:00pm on Monday, October 8th at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 N Lamar Blvd, Austin, Texas 78752.
