Effanel (Nell) Stovall Miller went to be with the Lord, peacefully at her home, on New Year's morning, January 1, 2017. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 25 years, Freddie Miller, her parents, R.C. Stovall Jr. and Dorothy Fariss Stovall, her sister Dottie Sue Patton, and her nephew Collier Dean Patton.
She is survived by her sister Doris Stovall Hamblin; her two sons, Howard Lane McRae, Jr. and wife Roberta, and Brad McRae and wife Lillian; her four step-sons, Robert Miller and wife Annie, Larry Miller, Jeff Miller and wife Jean, Kenneth Miller and wife Alex; seven grandchildren, Megan Coffeen and husband John, Joshua, Janine, Benjamin, and Samuel Miller, Katie Fry and husband Lewis, and Patrick McRae; two great-grandchildren, Hannah and Kendall Fry, and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
Nell was born in Orange, Texas on January 29, 1932. She later moved to Austin, and graduated from Austin High School in 1949. She and her family attended Kinney Avenue Baptist Church. Nell spent many years working as an executive administrator at Austin National Bank on Congress Avenue. She was a devoted employee and enjoyed her long career there.
Nell married Freddie Miller on October 20, 1977 and they became active members of St. Martin's Lutheran Church. Together they lived a wonderful life in the Onion Creek subdivision in Austin. They loved to dance and were members of the Onion Creek Country Club, and both were avid golfers. Nell and Freddie entertained many renowned professional golfers at their home when the Legends of Golf Tournament was hosted by Onion Creek Country Club. (Nell hit her first hole-in-one before her husband hit his nine. Nell has now joined Freddie in heaven and they are teeing up golf balls together again!)
She was famous for her delicious and beautiful holiday dinners every year, held at her home which overlooked Onion Creek Golf Course, and her yummy butter pie, a recipe handed down from generations before. She loved games (mahjong once a week with friends) and part of the family tradition was to play lots of board and card games, blitz especially, on her kitchen table every Thanksgiving holiday. She and Freddie were huge Texas Longhorns and Dallas Cowboys fans, so holidays were always fun-filled football days!
Nell and her husband also loved to hunt deer, pheasant, and other birds every hunting season. Her deer antlers were displayed in her beautiful living room.
Nell was blessed to have four wonderful caregivers, Rosy, Alice, Tina and Virginia, all of Nurses Case Management, and a special thanks goes to Ann, the owner. Also, a grateful thank you to Nell's longtime Onion Creek neighbor, Paula Miller, who was a loving support to Nell throughout her life.
Her family and friends will miss sweet "Nellie's" beautiful smile, fun-loving spirit, amazing cooking and her gracious hostessing of so many family gatherings and Onion Creek events.
The family will receive visitors in celebration of Nell's life at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 2620 S. Congress Ave., Austin, Friday evening, January 6, from 6-8 p.m. The graveside service will be Saturday, January 7, at 1 p.m. at Live Oak Cemetery, 200 Twin Creeks Road, Manchaca, Texas with the Reverend Peder Sandager of St. Martin's Lutheran Church officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Nell's honor to the Alzheimer's Association Capital of Texas Chapter, or to St. Martin's Lutheran Church of Austin.
