Elizabeth Ann Jeffrey, age 98, of Leander died Thursday, August 15, 2024. She was born March 20, 1926 on the family farm in rural Travis County, between Round Rock and Pflugerville. To family and friends, she was known as Sissy, Aunt, or Jeff.
Elizabeth grew up in West Austin and was a “Loyal Forever” alumna of S. F. Austin High School. She earned a degree in Chemistry from the University of Texas at Austin, then moved to Port Arthur, Texas to work as a chemist in the lab at Texaco. In the early 1940’s, it was quite unusual for a woman to have a career in the sciences, but Elizabeth broke traditional barriers by working at Texaco in a male-dominated field. She loved her family and friends, her bowling league, the Gulf Coast, the color blue, a good road trip, her lake house, classic westerns and Longhorn football. Of late, she tolerated the Dallas Cowboys. Elizabeth treasured the relationships she had with her closest friends, including Jane, Jane’s sons James and Raymond and their families, Lou and the Pense Family, Ann and the Jones Family, Eletha, Maxine, Wanda, and John.
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents, Fred Jeffrey and Minnie Blacklock Jeffrey; her brother James Fred Jeffrey; and her two sisters, Isabel Jeanene Jeffrey and Vera Jeffrey Linman. She is survived by her nephew, Andrew Linman, wife Viji Linman and son Nicholas; her brother-in-law Joe Linman; her niece, Jan Combs, husband Lee Combs, and their children Charlie and Clare.
Many thanks to Mel Costello and all of the wonderful staff at the Haven at San Gabriel, who went above and beyond the call of duty every day and cared for Elizabeth during the last few months.
Honorary pallbearers are Andrew Linman, James Stone, Ray Stone, Lee Combs, and Charlie Combs.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 27, 2024 at Austin Memorial Park Cemetery, 2800 Hancock Dr., Austin, TX 78731. Arrangements by Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 5416 Parkcrest Dr., Austin, TX 78731.
