

Emily Berdie Machu Griggs, was received into God’s embrace surrounded by her children and sister on June 15, 2016. She was welcomed by a host of many loved ones: her beloved husband Bert, her parents Emil and Bertha Machu, her brother Clarence along with many family members and friends who were also most dear to her.
Emily was born in Taylor, Texas on December 14, 1921 to Emil and Bertha Lanicek Machu. Soon, she became big sister to the late Clarence Machu and then Lillie Mae Machu Warmoth, who survives. She attended Manor High School, graduating in 1940. She married Bert Lee Griggs, the love of her life, on July 5, 1941 in Travis County. She and Bert were confirmed at St. Martins Lutheran Church in 1950. They later became members of Faith Lutheran Church, where they remained active. They are the parents of three children, who with their families survive: Jennifer Paul, husband Dwight and family, Kathy Cowherd and family, Bert Jr., wife Angie and their family. She was blessed with 12 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.
Emily’s name means industrious and that she was. She lived a committed life of purpose and dedication to her family and her faith. As a successful business woman, she balanced the needs of her family while exemplifying an untiring work ethic. She touched the lives of many through work, church and family events.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 18 from 4:00-6:00 at Cook Walden Funeral Home at 6100 North Lamar. Services for Emily are on Sunday, June 19 at 2:30, Faith Lutheran Church, 6600 Woodrow Ave. Interment will be in Cook-Walden Capital Parks Cemetery following the service.
Memorials may be made to St. Louis House, Faith Lutheran Church, Honor Flight Austin or Central Missouri Honor Flight.
