Mimi was the queen of Skip-Bo and the Game Show Network, a dedicated reader of cozy cat mysteries, and a loyal fan of Alan Jackson and Johnny Cash. She even learned how to use Alexa to play her favorite songs. She never needed a driver’s license—she had a golf cart and Cottontail Lane. What more does a woman need?
She had a laugh that filled the room (with a little bit of Garrett and Son’s snuff) and a spirit that was equal parts tough and tender. She especially loved giving people a hard time - some of us more than others, but we loved every second of it.
Mimi never missed a chance to make a memory, whether it was playing with the neighborhood kids, traipsing across Texas to rooster fights with Papo, doing leg exercises in a hotel room the night our house burned down, or picking dewberries in the spring.
She loved a good game and taught us all the important things in life: how to play jacks, wiffle ball, Yahtzee, jump rope, and poker—with pinto beans as our high-stakes currency. She made the best dressing and gravy, pinto beans, potato salad, kolaches, grilled cheese, pecan pie, and sweet tea this side of heaven.
Mimi was a world-class worrier when it came to her family’s safety. She was notorious for cycling through every name in the family before landing on the one she meant, but we always knew who she was talking to. She loved phone calls and made each one count—especially on your birthday. She would sing the best version of “Happy Birthday” you have ever heard.
Mimi always knew just what to say or when to simply listen. She leaves a huge hole in our hearts and lives and will be missed dearly for years to come. Loving her has been the greatest gift and to be loved by her was to know what unconditional love felt like. We know her legacy and lessons will live on through many generations.
The family would like to thank Traditions Health of Madisonville, Texas and CHI St. Joseph’s in Bryan, Texas for the care and compassion shown to Mimi and our family.
