Evelyn’s story begins on February 6, 1932 on a farm in Schulenburg, Texas. Gladys Wilson Glass looked down into the beautiful face of her 9th child and her 4th daughter born to her and Robert Glass. Her older siblings, John, Geneva, Nellie, Elmer, Raymond, Camella and Lowell welcomed their baby sister to the farm, they called her “Bae”. Her older sisters, along with their Aunt Esther soon became her mothers when her sweet mother Gladys passed away. Evelyn was just 4 years old. Her Daddy remarried and Mama Rosie helped to raise her.
Raised in a Christian family, Evelyn accepted Christ at an early age, 12 years old, and was baptized at St. James Baptist Church in Schulenburg, Texas.
Evelyn’s early education was in the schools in Schulenburg, she often talked about Harvey Johnson giving her and her siblings a ride to school and although they often had to walk, she graduated valedictorian from Schulenburg Colored J.A. Greene High School. She would continue her education later in life and get an Associate’s degree from St. Phillips College in San Antonio and later received a Nurse’s Aide Certificate.
What story is complete without a love interest and Evelyn’s love story was with Edward Lee Johnson, Jr., “Bubba”. They fell fast for each other and got engaged in Weimar, Texas on Juneteenth 1951. Their courtship was short and they married August 26, 1951 at St. James Baptist Church in Schulenburg. They moved to San Antonio which they would make home. Their life and marriage were blessed with two daughters, Pandora Johnson Milson and Angela Allean Johnson, who made their family complete. Their love story continued for 70 years until, as Evelyn said, “he ran off and left her” and on July 3, 2022 he went to his heavenly home.
Evelyn and Bubba joined Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church after their marriage and served there most of their lives. They served their Church and community offering rides to their church family, friends, and neighbors, to the doctor, hospital, church, grocery store, or wherever was needed. They fed the homeless and actively participated in prayer and teacher’s meetings until their health prevented them from doing so. Over the years, Evelyn served as a Deaconess, Sunday School Teacher, Choir Member, President of the Minister’s and Deacon’s Wives and was faithful in the various Missionary Auxiliaries.
Evelyn’s work in life reflected upon her spirit of service—she worked as a Substitute Teacher, Nurse’s Aide, Daycare Provider, Nanny and Housekeeper.
Evelyn loved her family and extended family-she was the driving force and founding member of the first Glass Family Reunion Planning Committee for the Reunion in 1991. She and Bubba helped plan and attend the Glass and Johnson Family Reunions for as long as they could.
Evelyn’s earthly journey ended on May 9, 2025, she joined the love of her life, Bubba, her parents, her daughter Pandora, her granddaughter Tiffany Milson Campbell, all of her siblings she grew up with, her other siblings-Thelma and Rudy, and other close relatives. She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter Angela Allean Johnson, her grandsons, Vincent Edward Milson, Larry Ray Durden II and Kyle Milson (Kristen), great grandsons, Boston, Jaxon , and Kingston Milson, Nicholas Campbell and great granddaughter Alexis Nichols and a host of other close relatives and friends.
