

She received her B.A. degree from Baylor University and became principal of a rural school where she met and later married Albert L. Derden, a State Legislative Representative from Falls County. Mrs. Derden received her Master's Degree from the University of Texas, Austin, and taught school in the Austin Independent School District for 27 years. She loved to travel at the end of each school year. Each summer she chose a continent in which to travel and explore, returning to the USA in time for the fall school term. She traveled in all the continents extensively except Africa.
Mrs. Derden was a charter member of Allendale Baptist Church (Great Hills Baptist Church), where she taught young adult ladies for twenty years. She was currently a member of Highland Park Baptist Church where she had worshiped since 1966.
She had two children, Zoe Ann Derden Shafer, deceased, and Albert L Derden Jr. who lives in Montgomery, Texas. Other survivors include her son-in-law, George A Shafer, her daughter-in-law, Patsy L Derden; four grandchildren Cheryl Ann Bland, Georgeann Winston, Albert Christopher Derden, and Laura Derden Hargrove; and nine great grandchildren, Michella Ann Nassar, Rebekah Poynor, Laura Poynor, Chase Winston, Chandler Winston, Lyle Derden, Fisher Hargrove, William Derden, and Adeline Hargrove.
Visitation hours will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11th at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home on North Lamar. A graveside service will be held Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at Austin Memorial Park Cemetery at 10:00am followed by a Memorial Service at Highland Park Baptist starting at 11:00am with Rev. Cheryl Kimble officiating. A reception at the church will follow the Memorial Service.
