

George Maurice Griffin, passed away in Georgetown, TX on February 7, 2017 at age 94. He was born on May 5, 1923 to William Maurice Griffin and Theresa Berg Griffin in Elgin, TX. George served in the Army Air Corp during WW II as a pilot and flight instructor. After the war he attended Southwest Texas Teacher College (Texas State University) in San Marcos, graduating with a degree in Business. George went to work for the Texas Department of Public Safety in 1951, retiring from the agency in 1988 as Chief of the Driver License Division.
George married Gladys Schuelke on July 24, 1953. They had two daughters, Donna and Joy. They were active in Crestview United Methodist Church, living in the Crestview subdivision their entire married life. After retirement, George and Gladys travelled extensively. They also spent many hours volunteering at the Visitor’s Booth at the Austin Airport, with the Austin Christmas Bureau, and many other local charities. George was once honored as Austin Volunteer of the Year. George also served as a volunteer and Board member of the Texas DPS Credit Union for 39 years. George enjoyed bowling and golfing.
George was preceded in death by his parents and wife Gladys. He is survived by daughters Donna Sauls and husband Mike, Joy McCullough and husband Doug, grandchildren Eric Sauls, Ryan Sauls and wife Amanda, and Natalie McCullough, great grandchildren Ember and Xander Sauls. He is also survived by a brother William Griffin and wife Jean and brother and sister in-law William and Stella Barrington.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Wesleyan Assisted Living in Georgetown for their care of George. They would also like to thank Visiting Angels Pat and Diedra. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Crestview United Methodist Church, Wesleyan Homes, or the Texas DPS Museum.
