Gloria was born in Austin, Texas on January 8, 1943. She married young and had 4 children, Jovita, Joe, Jr., Jerome, and John Paul.
After her children were out of elementary, she enrolled in classes at the old Brackenridge Hospital where she studied to be a nurse’s aide. After several years of working the graveyard shift at the
hospital, she moved to Houston where she changed careers and worked in a dental office. Later, she return to Austin working in the medical field at the Blackstock Medical Center. Her last employer was Seton where she worked in the AISD school nurse's offices.
There are many people that we would like to thank that helped during our mom’s stay at St. David’s Medical Center. We will forever be grateful to her nieces, Dolores Moncada and Lisa Castillo; and cousin, Rose Hanson Pineda for their time and moral support; to the Well Med doctors, Dr. Wilson & Dr. Isaac-Elder, the nurses, aides, and staff on the 5th Floor.
Gloria is survived by her brother, John Albert Castillo (Helen), her daughter, Jovita Salinas (Arturo); son,
Jerome Avila (Lisa), and John Paul Avila. Her grandkids, Tiffany, Michael, Natalie, Amanda, Joe, III, Ariel, and Mercedes; great grandkids, Hunter, Kaitlyn, Matthew, Mason, Joselyn, Alyssa, Jordan, and Ava; & great great grandkids, Maizley, Hestynn, Tatum, & Malachi.
She is preceded in death by her parents, John T. and Gregoria B. Castillo, infant brother, John Leonard Castillo, son, Joe A. Avila,Jr., infant grandson, Anthony Avila, granddaughter, Natale Moran Buchhorn and the father of her children, Joe A Avila.
