November 10, 1933 – November 25, 2023
Like a butterfly, Gloria soared above the challenges of the life into which she was born. Supported and protected by her sister, best friend, ally and advocate, Jewel Westbrook, Gloria went on to become a wife, mother, grandmother, model, artist, educator, and ace scrabble player.
An amazing artist, Gloria was able to capture the spirit of any subject she tackled, be it three boys on a beach, a portrait of a clown, a quiet landscape, or a still life with fruit. Her paintings hang on the walls of many friends’ and families’ homes. Later in life, her keen eye for design resulted in some of the most beautiful flower arrangements ever placed on a table and gift-wrapped packages (even if the gift was only underwear and socks) under a Christmas tree.
Gloria’s great sense of style lives on in each of her three grandchildren – Jamie, Skylar and Clayton. Her modeling career was never far from her mind. She always dressed perfectly for every occasion – just in case there was a camera nearby – and encouraged her grandchildren to do likewise. She came by her nickname “Glamma Gloria” honestly.
Preparing amazing meals was her love language. Chocolate cakes, monkey bread, chicken fried steaks and so much more bring fond memories of holidays and celebrations spent together.
In a world woven with a tapestry of color, Gloria always chose purple. Let us remember, as we say good-bye, the hues of life – like the color purple – are varied, vast and ever changing, often in unexpected ways. In her memory, let us cherish the good times we shared with hope for all that lies ahead.
A Celebration of Life for Gloria will be held Thursday, January 4, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar, Austin, TX 78752.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.cookwaldenfuneralhome.com for the Thompson family.
