August 3, 1929 – July 15, 2025
Gussie Lee Lilian Hebel, 95, passed away peacefully at home in Austin, Texas, on July 15, 2025. Born on August 3, 1929, in Poth, Texas, Gussie lived a life full of creativity, adventure, and deep devotion to her family.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 55 years, William “Bill” Hebel; her son, Travis William Powell; and four cherished siblings.
She is survived by her children: Alan Powell and wife Ann, Mark Hebel, and Marie Hebel; and her grandchildren: Kiana Powell and fiancé Clay Ramos, Hannah Powell, and Jessica Denny.
🎨 Gussie was an accomplished Hill Country landscape artist whose passion for painting took her and her family across Texas for art shows. After Bill retired from the post office, the two hit the road in their motorhome — leaving behind two teenagers at home — and spent the next 40 years traveling the country. They only paused to check in on the house before heading back out on the road. Their adventures ended at age 87 when Bill decided it was time to hang up the keys. Along the way, they made countless friends and memories, which Gussie loved to share through her stories.
💛 Gussie, also known as Lillian, was the heart and soul of her family. She was tough when she needed to be — her kids joked that her hand felt like a butcher block during discipline — but her compassion ran deep. She had a gift for comforting others, always knowing just what to say or do when someone was hurting.
If you met Gussie, you remembered her. Her faith in God, warmth, wit, and spirit left a lasting impression on everyone she encountered. She will be deeply missed.
