Harold Edward Angell, born December 15, 1934, died in the early morning of January 5, 2022, of natural causes after spending his final hours surrounded by loving family members and friends. “Eddie” as he was known to all, was a proud Austinite and son of the late Thomas Harold Angell and Laura Eliza Angell. At an early age, Eddie professed his faith in Jesus Christ and joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he was a dedicated member. He served faithfully in many positions including Ward Clerk and he was a dedicated ministering brother to countless families in the church.
Eddie was united in holy matrimony to the late Peggy Gail Howell on June 3, 1955. This union was blessed with three children: Edward Lee Angell, Susan Novelle Angell and John Lafayette Angell.
He attended the San Marcos Military Academy for three years, graduated from Austin High School in 1955, attended the University of Houston and played football for one year until he was injured, and completed his college education at St. Edwards University. His love of football and the Texas Longhorns never wavered, even when something went wrong and he was convinced the game was over.
While in high school, he had a passion and love of fast cars, “hot rods!” It wasn’t uncommon for him to be seen racing up Congress Avenue in his 1932 Ford flathead Hot Rod Coupe! And throughout the 1950’s and early 1960’s, he participated in drag races at the Oak Hills Drag Strip. His car was a 1957 Ford with a Highway Patrol Interceptor engine.
After college and early in his marriage, Eddie worked at the Austin Fire Department. He drove the big Hook-N-Ladder truck that was used to fight fires on multiple floor buildings. Later, he became a member of the U.A. Plumbers and Pipefitters Local where he worked in this profession until his retirement in 2001. He was often sought after due to his flawless reputation and professional work ethic. And he was known as a man who always gave his employers an honest day of work.
Eddie had many hobbies and interests. He was a Ham Operator (call sign WA5CVJ), barbeque pit master, deer hunter, and he enjoyed traveling to see the NHRA races in Las Vegas, Dallas and Houston with the great love of his life, Gail. Eddie loved the Lord and loved his family. And he loved his parents and siblings, Elaine and Joe. He deeply loved his wife Gail and his children Eddie, Susan and John. There were times when Eddie would go without just so he could provide more for his family.
Eddie is preceded in death by his loving wife Gail Angell, his brother Joe Angell, and his son John Angell. He is survived by two children and their spouses: son Eddie L. Angell and wife Sarah Angell, daughter Susan Angell-Gonzalez and husband Albert Gonzalez; sister Elaine Winkler; grandson Robert Angell and wife Erin Angell, grandson Tom Angell; great granddaughters: Bailey Mae Matejowsky, Brooklyn Novelle Angell, Eleanor Rose Angell, Charlotte Gail Angell; great grandsons: Wyatt Elijah Angell, John David Angell, Sammy Lee Angell.
The family wishes to thank Heart to Heart Hospice for the care and compassion provided. Harold Edward Angell’s Funeral Service will be held at 12:30 pm. on Thursday, January 13, 2022, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2111 Parker Lane, Austin, Texas 78741. Face masks required if attending.
