Colleague, My Mentor, My Friend.                                          
Hugo and I met in the summer of 1972, and I must say it was under fire. Hugo was just appointed Supervisor of Mechanical, Engineering, and I was there on the installation of a new complicated machining system, with way too many new gadgets, programable controllers that failed time and time again.  We were both under the gun, so not to say the least, it caused a few heart to heart discussions between us. We soon found out, that we had very similar personalities (It came up occasionally later on and we both just chuckled.) After about six gruelling weeks, I said to Hugo, the only way you're   going to keep this heap of junk running  if you hire me. He asked, Josh are you serious? (He called me Josh.)  
I said, Hugo, I'm in here day and night, I might as well work here.  One thing led to an other, with Hugo's perseverance I was hired as one of his machining engineers. The rest is history. With Hugo's excellent engineering knowledge, my mechanical and concept knowledge, I think we made a great team. With mutual respect and similar backgrounds we formed a friendship that lasted a life time.
In 2010 Sylvia my wife and I travelled from Ocala, Fl. to Austin TX.
to attend Hugo's 80th Birthday Party, and Hermie  and Hugo's 
50th wedding anniversary party. What a great time that was.
With the Minnerup family all together once again, we never ran out of stories for a week. 
In closing, my sincere condolences to the family. 
 I can see now, as Hugo approached the Pearly Gates, calling out
 St. Peter (listen here, you have way too many Set Screws in those 
Gates, I'll re-design them in my spare time.)

Marianne and Family, Hugo was the best mentor I ever had, although I only worked for him for one year. He started me off with organizing all the drill bit drawings which was a great learning experience  - I learned about the tools for drilling all those holes in the carburetors. He gradually increased my tasks, so that by the end of the year I had designed an entire drilling station. Ever watchful, ever caring, he guided my design efforts and opened my eyes to the world of engineering. He lives on in my memory as a great man!

I worked for Hugo as a young engineer in his machining group at the RPD. He had a significant impact as a mentor in the development, expectations, and discipline of those that worked for him. Excellence and creativity in the performance of your work was a trademark that he instilled in many of us throughout his career not to mention the many quips he would come up to drive a point home – “don’t be like the horse that goes from the barn to the field, and the field to the barn” or, “sometimes I think I’m crazy, and everyone else is sane”. For many of us who still gather to this day, you would still hear a HUGOism being used in regular conversation. It is sad that Hugo has passed and will certainly be missed by family and those acquaintances near and far. His legacy lives in many of us.

Dear family. I am so sorry for your loss. I am retired from GM Rochester Products and was a few hirings behind  Hugo, but he and his generation set the bar for us who were coming up into the organization.  May he rest in peace.  My deepest sympathies. Louise Smith Belline, Rochester, NY.

Hugo had a tremendous influence on my life.. he was fearless in taking on incredibly challenging projects and his skill as an engineer ensured success, at least most of the time! I spent many hours with him on those projects at his small farm in Rochester NY & his beautiful home in Austin.  I successfully passed his classes in Ditch Digging, Well Digging, Cement Mixing and any other manual labor skill he didn't want to do himself, he was good at getting people to work! I could write a short book about Hugo.. but I'll end with one of his many wise proverbs : The dumbest farmers grow the biggest potatoes. Rest in peace my friend.. Love Owen
