Izzy was born on May 8, 1932 to Benno and Clara Land in Kleinfreibreich, a small German community outside of Fredericksburg Texas. She graduated from Fredericksburg HS and married Don Smith. They moved several times to Robstown, Bryan and Boerne, finally settling in Kerrville to raise their three daughters. She was a secretary at Pampells Drug Store, Schreiner College and Kerrville Funeral Home. After a divorce she moved to Austin where she met and married George Creel, who preceded her in death. She met her current husband Galen Dodson at a dance club and they shared many happy years.
Izzy made friends everywhere she went. In her younger years she was a real spitfire and gained the nickname Tiger. If she was looking at you with a frown on her face you better clear out. Izzy loved dancing and football and remained an avid fan of Kerrville Tivy and the Dallas Cowboys. All family gatherings were blessed with her cooking and baking skills.
Izzy is preceded in death by her mother and father, her older sister Margaret and her second husband George Creel. She is survived by her husband Galen Dodson, sister Doris Schaeferkoeter and daughters Carol Smith of New Braunfels, Joy Smith Roederer of Ft Worth and Sherry Smith Hinesman and husband Rodney of Austin. Izzy has 8 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.
There will be a gathering of family and friends on Thursday, June 6, 2019, starting at 3 p.m. at Cook-Walden / Forest Oaks Funeral Home, with a memorial service to follow at 4:00 p.m. Following the service, we would love to have everyone come to her home for food and a celebration of her life.
