

Dr. James R. Hurst known to some as JR or Daddy Hurst
Parents Jesse and Libby Hurst
James was known for being well dressed and stylish in his suits and hats. He was a man of many talents which included: An artist whose drawings, paintings, and sculptures were displayed in several churches in the 1960s. Bilingual in Spanish, English, and Sign Language, he embodied both creativity and connection. In the 1970s, he became a business owner, running the Spanada Room Lounge, and later served as the leader of a BMX bike team, where his youngest son, Julian, was a medalist member.
His Education:
He began his studies at Huston-Tillotson University, later transferring to Southwest Texas State University(now Texas State University), were he earned his Bachelor's Degree. He went on to achieve both a Master's and a Ph.D. in Psychology from North Texas State University, During his academic career, he was also a proud member of Phi Beta Sigma.
His Career:
He proudly served as a United States Air Force Veteran and later as Director of Special Services at Camp Gary Job Corps. His dedication to education and service continued as an instructor at the Texas School for the Deaf and the Blind, and he also contributed his expertise through his work with the Texas Workforce.
James leaves behind memories with Tracie Miller, Douglas Hurst, Julian Hurst, Willie Odems (Demoseneedes), and Cynthia E. Mayes, along with seven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family of Dr. James R. Hurst extends heartfelt gratitude for the many expressions of love, kindness, and support shown to us during this time of bereavement. His legacy of love, service, and dedication will continue to live on in all who had the privilege of knowing him.
