

James Bernard Lingwall, Ph.D. Dr. James Bernard Lingwall (Jim) died June 2, 2005 in Austin, Texas. He was born on July 6, 1935 in Harcourt, Iowa to the Reverend Martin Lingwall and Violette Anderson Lingwall. After graduating from Axtell, Nebraska High School he attended Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. He then studied at the University of Minnesota, where he received his B.S. and M.A. degrees and completed his Ph.D. in Communication Sciences and Disorders in 1967. He joined the faculty of the University of Kansas (Lawrence) in 1966, where he was professor, Director of the Speech and Hearing Clinic, and Head of the Division of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. From 1981 to 1990 he served as Director of Professional Affairs of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) in Rockville, Maryland. Moving to Texas in 1991, he was professor and chair of the Allied Health Department at Texas State University for two years before his retirement in Austin. Dr. Lingwall was a gifted teacher, researcher, and professional leader with a career-long commitment to furthering professional standards. He was President and recipient of honors of the Kansas Speech-Language-Hearing Association, a Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, and he contributed his expertise to many other scientific organizations and universities throughout the country. He had a zest for life and a multitude of interests. He was a fly fisherman who tied his own flies, nature photographer, choral singer, storyteller extraordinaire, antique hand tool collector, restorer of antique furniture, and outdoorsman. He lovingly maintained the family Minnesota lake cabin where his family spent happy and memorable times. Jim is survived by his wife, Maxine Tubbs Lingwall; his sister, Beverly Mooney and husband David of W. St. Paul, MN; his aunt Leona Marymee and husband David of Fremont, CA; his three children, Nancy Lingwall Espinosa of Lawrence, KS, Mary Lingwall of Lawrence, KS, and Andrew Lingwall and wife Peggy of Clarion, PA; two step-children, Ann Campbell Flannery and husband Richard of Narberth, PA and Douglas Campbell and wife Susan of Mission Hills, KS; and sister-in-law, Marian Tubbs Coonrod of Georgetown, TX. He is survived by four grandchildren and eight step-grandchildren: Christian Espinosa and Abigail Lingwall of Lawrence, KS; Noah and Cailyn Lingwall of Clarion, PA; Carolyn and Kevin Flannery of Narberth, PA; and Molly, Tom, Jill, Leigh, Ann and Peter Campbell of Missions Hills, KS. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family wishes to thank all who helped Jim along the journey with his rare neurological disease. These include Girling Health Care Therapy Services, especially Terry Sansom; Drs. James Little and John Bertelson; caregivers Sylvia Bonnell and Patsy Grant; and the remarkable and caring Stonebridge Health Care Center staff. A memorial service will be held in the chapel of University United Methodist Church, 24th and Guadalupe, Austin on Monday, June 6th at 2:00 p.m. with a reception following in Fellowship Hall. Parking will be available at Central Parking, 25th and Guadalupe (across the street from the church).
