James Arthur “Bubba” Smith passed away peacefully on January 20, 2025, surrounded by his family. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, great-grandfather, and loyal friend. Born on February 14, 1937, in Austin, Texas, Bubba dedicated his life to his faith, family, and work in the produce business. He began his career with the family-owned Smith Produce before continuing his work in the produce industry, where he served others with dedication for many years. His commitment to hard work and providing for his family remained at the heart of everything he did.
Known simply as “Bubba” by nearly everyone, his given name, James, was rarely used—and even less likely to get a response. He never met a stranger, and the family often joked that he couldn’t go anywhere without knowing someone. His outgoing nature, quick wit, and warm heart made him a friend to all, whether they had known him for years or only a few minutes.
Bubba’s love for God and family was the cornerstone of his life. His passion for sports also left a lasting legacy in the Austin community. He officiated basketball, baseball, and softball for many years and spent over 30 years working with University of Texas athletics. He loved working the shot clock at the women’s basketball games. On Saturdays you always knew where to find him at the football games—right at Gate 105 of the upper deck—where his smile and warm greetings made your day. And for baseball games, he brought the same dedication and enthusiasm that made him unforgettable. He also worked with the Austin Toros, running the shot clock, continuing his love of sports for many years.
Bubba was also instrumental in establishing girls’ junior high school basketball in Austin, championing opportunities for young women at a time when such efforts faced significant resistance.
Bubba was always a man of his word, believing that a handshake was more binding than any contract. He trusted people, was quick to lend a helping hand, and lived a life filled with generosity and kindness. His sense of humor, love for storytelling, and larger-than-life personality made him unforgettable to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
He was deeply devoted to his family, taking immense pride in their achievements and showing unconditional love. His marriage of 66 years to Nancy Grist Smith was a beautiful example of enduring partnership and commitment that inspired many.
Bubba was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Elizabeth (Bettye) Smith, and his brother, Edward Frazier “Beebo” Smith. He is survived by his beloved wife, Nancy; daughters, Jody Ray and husband Wayne of Thrall, and Jamie Smith of Austin; granddaughter, Jennifer Seamans and husband Shane; grandson, Raymond Keeler; and great-grandchildren, Faith, Joseph (affectionately known as “Little Bubba”), and Xavier.
A man of faith, love, and boundless generosity, Bubba Smith’s legacy will continue to inspire all who knew him. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered for the love he gave, the lives he touched, and the values he embodied.
