Janet Marie Lincecum MacLean (Jan) passed away Thursday, Oct.29th, thus ending her seven-year trial of paralysis, being totally bedridden following a spinal blood clot. Jan was born in El Campo, Texas January 14, 1941, the daughter of Ina Marie and Val D. Lincecum, Jr. Her father was a Major in the US Army, and the family lived in various places, including Kentucky, Georgia, Arkansas, Germany, and finally in San Antonio.
Jan graduated from Alamo Heights High School in San Antonio and attended the University of Texas. She married Paul MacLean in 1961, and they lived in numerous small West Texas towns, as well as Fort Worth and Houston, before finally settling in Austin in 1976. After their three children were in high school, Jan finished her education, earning her bachelor’s degree in Social Work from St. Edward’s University in Austin and her Masters of Social Work from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio.
Jan was a certified psychotherapist practicing in various areas, including individual, family, marital, and group therapy. The latter part of her career focused mainly on addressing sexual abuse, working with both offenders and survivors. In this area, she did ground-breaking work at Austin Child Guidance Center as a counselor with Project S.E.Y.; served on the board of the Pebble Project; and worked with and helped establish the Austin Center for Battered Women (now known as SafePlace). She also did extensive training and work with Elisabeth Kubler-Ross in her “Life, Death, and Transition” workshops. In 1988, Jan was honored as “One of Austin’s Ten Outstanding Citizens” by the Austin Pastoral and Counseling Center. She continued her work in attempting to raise public awareness of these issues in private practice until her retirement in 2008.
Preceded in death by her mother, Ina Marie Miller, in February of this year, Jan is survived by her children and grandchildren: Dawn MacLean and her daughter, Lindsay McGeHee; Kerry Jon MacLean, his wife Sheila, and their sons, Jon-Luc and Ethan Michael; and Jamie MacLean, his wife Jane, and daughters Josie and Jackie. Also surviving Jan are her sister, Toni Lincecum Casteel; her step-father, Bob Miller; and her best friend, Marcia Eyrich.
Celebrating a life of service to her community and her family, a visitation will be held Saturday at noon at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 N. Lamar, followed by a graveside service and burial at Austin Memorial Park Cemetery on Hancock Dr.
