Jerry graduated from Texas Tech University in 1956 after serving in the U.S. Army. He went on to attend medical school at UTMB Galveston with an internship in New Orleans. He returned to Galveston in 1961 for his orthopedic residency.
The family of five moved to Austin in 1965 where he began his orthopedic practice. He was also the orthopedic team physician (1969 – 1986) for the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at the University of Texas where he developed a sports medicine rotation program for the University's orthopedic residents. It was through Jerry's love of sports medicine that he brought arthroscopic surgery to Austin. He helped train paramedics for EMS and volunteered to serve on the SS Hope ship in Kingston Jamaica (1971). Jerry was a founding member of the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine; was president of the Texas Orthopedic Association (1985 – 1986); and was a member in state and local medical organizations.
Jerry loved his church and was an active member of Tarrytown United Methodist Church for 50 years. He also enjoyed his membership in the Exchange Club, Woods and Waters Club, Austin Yacht Club, Tarry House, Austin Country Club, and Westwood Country Club.
He liked flying and became an instrument rated private pilot. In addition to flying, he loved playing golf and tennis, fly fishing, hunting, playing bridge, and traveling. He learned to tie his own flies and loved using fly rods he built. He taught his three sons about hunting and fishing, but also enjoyed watching them participate in baseball and football. He was a wonderful and loving father.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, July 26, 2016, at 10:30 AM at Tarrytown United Methodist Church at 2601 Exposition Blvd. In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to the Dr. Jerry and Janie Julian Endowed Scholarship Fund at UT Austin, PO Box 7458, Austin, TX 78713, or a charity of your choice.
