John Anthony (Tony) Beall was born on February 13, 1948 in Austin, Texas and died on November 21, 2006 of esophageal cancer. With the exception of a year or two in Virginia, Tony grew up in Austin and attended Mathews Elementary, Rosedale Elementary, and Lamar Junior High. He graduated from McCallum High School in 1966 and joined the Army in 1971. After serving in Vietnam Tony returned to Austin and graduated from Southwest Texas State University with a liberal arts degree and a minor in business. He worked at the Texas Highway Department as an accountant for 30 years and retired in 2001. Tony's lifelong best friend was Jack Lyle, who was with him throughout his illness. His nephew Josh Cook was also close to Tony and the three had many Saturday lunches together at 11:45 at El Patio. Tony also leaves behind his sister April Boardman and her husband Ernest; his nieces and nephews Abby Cook Whitworth, Matt Cook, and Samantha Cook; and Joyce Lyle, Jack's wife. As a nurse, she was our technical guide throughout his illness. Tony was a solitary person, but in his youth was very funny and at one time danced in the chorus of a musical at Zachary Scott. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Hospice Austin Christopher House, where Tony was well and lovingly cared for at the end. He will be missed. So long John Wayne.
