John C. Foshee died Monday, September 12th. John was born July 1, 1929, to Azor Beryl and Marcia Philips Foshee, of Gladewater, Texas. At the University of Texas he met Hazel Smith, of San Antonio; they married in May, 1949. After taking an undergraduate degree in journalism in 1952 John entered officer candidate school at Lackland AFB in San Antonio. Following service as an US Air Force lieutenant John entered UT Law School, after which he joined Arthur Bagby and Bob Armstrong in private practice. Interested in environmental law John served as director of the legal division of the Texas General Land Office, was later associated with Clark, Thomas and Winters, and concluded his career as staff attorney at the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
He served as a member and president of the St. Andrews School board of trustees and in the same capacities of Laguna Gloria Museum of Art. John and his wife were members of Argyle Club, the Austin Country Club, the Headliners Club, Westwood Country Club, and charter members of Tarry House. John was a member of Ducks Unlimited, the Port Bay Club, Sportsman Club of Texas, Woods and Waters, and a confederation of friends known as The Lunch Bunch. John and Hazel were members of The Church of the Good Shepherd.
The family sincerely thanks the management and staff of Westminster Manor and the Westminster Manor Health Center for the caring professionalism they provided John (and his family). The family will always be grateful for the generosity of love and concern exhibited every day by those who took care of John.
John was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Hazel Foshee. He is survived by his son, Page Foshee, of Austin; daughter Clare Foshee, of Dallas; brother-in-law Richard Smith and his wife, Josephine Smith, of Houston; niece Quincy Smith, of Austin; nephews Adam Wilt and wife, Li Wilt, of San Francisco; Justin Wilt and wife, Helen Wilt, their children Murphy Wilt and Amelia Wilt, of Arlington, Virginia; nephew Elliott Smith and wife, Denise Smith, and their children Zachary Smith and Katherine Smith, of Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
The family will hold a private celebration of John's life at an undetermined date at Stowers Ranch, Hunt, Texas, when John's ashes will be spread at several areas, foremost of which is the location at which John and friends camped each deer season. Considering John's love of animals and in light of the awful fires surrounding Austin, the family requests that in lieu of flowers those so inclined make a contribution either to the Austin Humane Society or to the organization of their choice.
