John Alan Gibbs, age 53, entered into the presence of his Lord on February 20, 2026, in Austin, Texas. While our hearts are heavy, we find comfort in knowing that his life was firmly rooted in faith, love, and purpose. John was born March 1, 1972, in Dallas, Texas to Jim and Judy Gibbs. He attended Highland Park High School before pursuing his degree and graduating from The University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Science in geology in 1996. While at Texas, he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and his lifelong pursuit of knowledge and understanding began to flourish.
Upon graduation, John began work in the field as a geologist for Schlumberger where he ran a seismic crew conducting surveys. In 1999, he founded Durango Doors. From humble beginnings as a small, subleased office inside a retail tile store, John expanded Durango Doors to become one of the largest and most successful iron door companies in Central Texas, employing over 30 people he cared deeply about. By his side was his beloved wife, Natalie, who helped him build and grow his legacy. Their marriage was a partnership, grounded in faith, strengthened by love, and marked by mutual respect and devotion.
Above all, John loved his family. He was a loving and devoted husband to Natalie and a proud and adoring father to their two sons, Cooper and Brady. His boys were his greatest joy, and he cherished every moment spent guiding them, encouraging them, and simply being with them. He led his family with humility, wisdom, and a servant’s heart. John loved his parents and always strived to honor them in everything he did. John enjoyed a very close relationship with his only sibling, his brother Ford, whom he admired and treasured deeply.
John loved the outdoors. Whether fishing, running the trail, or working and resting on the family farm in East Texas, he found peace in nature and being outdoors. He was endlessly curious, a man who loved to ask questions, listen carefully, and truly understand the perspectives of others. He approached complex issues not with judgment, but with a desire to learn. His thoughtful spirit and open heart reflected the love and grace he sought to live out daily. John’s life reflected quiet strength, steadfast faith, and enduring love. Though we grieve his absence, we rejoice in the promise of eternal life and the assurance that he is at peace. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the business he built, the land he loved, the laughs he shared, and the countless lives he touched.
John is survived by his wife of 14 years Natalie Shipp Gibbs and their two sons, Cooper and Brady, parents Jim and Judy Gibbs of Dallas, brother Ford Gibbs and his children Hank, Lark, Reid, an extended family of in-laws that he loved—Rick and Rolinda Shipp and Alex, Lindsey, Vivian and Romeo Russian, as well as a host of family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, in the Chapel at Riverbend Church, 4214 N. Capital of Texas Hwy, Austin, TX 78746.
