
John was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey on June 10, 1948 to Helen Reksc and John Ostarticki. He grew up in Linden, New Jersey with his older brother, Raymond. Ray served in the Navy while John joined the Air Force after high school. He was stationed at Bergstrom Air Force Base in Austin, Texas the four years he served. He was part of Bergstrom's basketball team that traveled and competed with other Air Force Bases.
Upon completing his 4 years of service, John had many offers to play college basketball. He committed to Huston-Tillotson in Austin where he received a full scholarship to attend college and play basketball. He played all 4 years and graduated in 1975 with a Bachelor of Arts in science and secondary education. John met his wife, Anne while playing basketball for Huston-Tillotson. Anne attended St. Edward's University in Austin and graduated with degrees in sociology and elementary education. In April 2013 John was presented the Pioneer Award from Huston-Tillotson for Outstanding Leadership and Dedication to Excellence.
John and Anne were married at St. Ignatius Church in Austin on April 14, 1973. After John graduated he was hired by Austin Independent School District to teach biology and life science in high school and middle school. John retired from teaching after 30 years as well as coaching basketball, football and volleyball. John was the first basketball coach for Lake Travis High the year they became a district separating from Dripping Springs. After retirement he picked up playing golf, which he loved. He became a marshal at a couple of courses with Star Ranch being his favorite to work and play.
John is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his brother, Ray and his wife, Pat along with their two sons David and Chris. In addition, John is survived by his loving wife, Anne of 52 years and their sons Mikel Paul and Brian Adam with his wife, Margo. John always said his boys were his pride and joy; the best trophies he ever received. He felt like he had a daughter when Brian and Margo married. They were blessed with three children, who John adored.
