

He married Janie Diaz on September 27, 1947.
John joined the Army where he was decorated with the following honors, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal.
He was employed as a cook with Victor’s Italian Village for 23 years after serving in the Army. In 1967, he became the owner/operator of Sammie’s Shoe Repair until his retirement in 1990.
Mr. Salazar was an active member of St. Mary’s Cathedral, the Holy Name Society and St. Vincent De Paul Society.
He enjoyed fishing, barbecues and cooking for his family. He loved watching baseball with his wife.
He always put his family and the needs of others first. He loved his wife and children. He was a quiet man with a great sense of humor who will be missed by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Albert Salazar and Mike Salazar.
John is survived by his wife, Janie D. Salazar; sons, John D. Salazar, Jr. and wife, Rosemary, Julian D. Salazar, and Jerome D. Salazar, all of Austin; daughters, Julia D. Salazar, Juliana Salazar of Austin, Jane Rose Balagia and husband, Jefferson of Pflugerville, Jacinta Salazar, and Jessica Fisher and husband, Säal Jeremiah
Fisher, all of Austin; sisters, Susie Gonzales of Austin and Ramona Garcia and husband David, of San Antonio; brother, Simon Salazar and wife, Dolores of Austin; grandchildren, Leticia Ann Calvo and husband, Joseph, Myra Ayn Salazar, Julian Salazar, Jr., Joseph Salazar, Austin Salazar, Jonathan James Balagia, and Jessica Alyssa Balagia; great-grandchildren, Sara Anne Calvo, Josephine Salazar, Julian Salazar, III and Cassandra Salazar; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., followed by the recitation of the Rosary at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, October 29, 2003 in the Colonial Chapel of Cook-Walden Funeral Home.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, October 30, 2003 at Dolores Catholic Church, 1111 Montopolis Drive with Reverend Paul Pudussery, CSC, Celebrant. Rite of Committal will follow at Assumption Cemetery.
The family would like to thank all the helpful and caring staff that took care of Pop: Dr. Thomas R. McMinn, Dr. John K. Politz, his nurses and staff at CTVS, Dr. Robert W. Schoen, Jr., Dr. Joseph Spann, and Dr. David Kessler. Also, a special thanks to Mike Martin and Dianne Riggs of Advanced Prosthetics; the nurses and staff at Heart Hospital and St. David’s Hospital.
