His early years saw him helping out on the family farm, graduating from Cave City, Arkansas High School, trying out for the St. Louis Cardinals and working at an ice cream factory in Memphis, Tennessee.

He then settled in Houston and raised a family, where he worked for many years as an industrial sales representative before making the move to Austin.
Prior to his becoming ill, Joseph had attended Shepherd of the Hills Christian Church.
An avid golfer, he was a long-time member of Barton Creek Country Club.
Joe had also been an excellent, commercially-rated private pilot.
