

She graduated in 1952 from Madison East High School located in Wisconsin. She was a member of the Spanish Club and Officiating Club. Joy earned an Athletic Award while on the Volleyball team and later attended Practical Nursing School.
In her younger days she worked as a cook, waitress and cashier at Uptown Grill in Meridian. Later she worked as a homemaker and dedicated/supportive Officer’s wife. After Jim retired from the Air Force, they owned and operated Lakeside Video in Lakeway.
Joy was actively involved in Austin Women’s Bowling Association, Women’s International Bowling Club, Shaw AFB Women’s Bowling Association and Officer Wives’ Bridge Club.
She is preceded in death by her parents Rufus Talbert DeCell, II & Vivian Yvette Buchanan, her infant son, David Ross Madry, her sister & brother Donna Karen DeCell & Rufus Talbert DeCell, III and her beloved husband of 42 years, Col. James Alan Madry.
Joy is survived by her son Bruce Madry, (Peggy) of Groves, TX, daughter, Mary Lynne Gibbs, (Marty) of Lakeway, TX, her sons, Don Nichols (Carmen), Jim Nichols both of Georgetown, her sister, Lynda George (Bill) of Del Ray, FL, thirteen grandchildren, Brook and Miranda Madry , Kevin Kulhanek Jr., Kristy Schmidt, Kelly & Kerrigan Gibbs, Amber Cattron, Donnie & Dina Nichols, Emily, Erin, Ella and Elin Nichols; seven great grandchildren and many friends, nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank ALL the staff and her hairstylist, Melody at Brookdale Lohmans in Lakeway, for the care and compassion they showed our loved one in her final days.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life at Cook-Walden Forest Oaks on August 25, 2023. Visitation with the family will be 11AM- 1PM. Memorial Service at 1PM. Interment to follow at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home at 6300 W William Cannon Dr, Austin, TX.
Pallbearers will be David DeCell, Max Evans, Thomas Fisher Jr., Kevin Kulhanek Jr., Shawn McKinney, Henry Schmidt, III and Brey Sykora.
