Joyce Louise Poe Scogin, 93, of Austin, Texas, passed away peacefully on May 13, 2025. Born on September 29, 1931, in Moline, Texas to Elmer and Alice Arrowood Poe, Joyce was the middle of five siblings: Bob, Raymond “Corky”, Joyce, Donald, and Laura. Joyce graduated as valedictorian from Lometa High School in 1949 where she enjoyed basketball, playing as a guard in half-court girls’ ball. After graduation, she moved to Austin to attend business school and she met her husband, Gaylord Virgil Scogin, with whom she shared a lifetime of love and devotion. They were married on February 24, 1951.
Her life was always marked by joy, family, and her devout faith in Christ. Joyce's love of family was most clearly felt around the table. For many years, she hosted Tuesday night suppers for her children and grandchildren, filling her home with warmth, laughter, and the aroma of delicious home-cooked meals. Her blueberry banana cream cheese pies were eagerly anticipated every New Year’s Day, and her German chocolate cake, homemade ice cream, sourdough bread, cinnamon sweet rolls, and waffles became treasured family traditions. She found deep joy in not only preparing delicious meals, but creating comfort and connection. She also expressed her care and creativity through sewing—crafting everything from car seat covers to frilly dresses, many for her children and grandchildren. Joyce enjoyed watching basketball and was an avid fan of the San Antonio Spurs for many years. She even attended a Spurs game with her grandson Nathan.
Additionally, Joyce was a devout follower of Jesus Christ. For many years she was a member of Northwest Baptist Church, where she faithfully taught 4th grade Sunday School and served with joy in numerous Vacation Bible Schools. Her faith expressed itself in action—often transporting friends and neighbors to church services, doctor visits, and other appointments. Everyone she met was greeted with a receptive smile and twinkling blue-green eyes. Her faith also expressed itself through her love of music as she enjoyed playing the piano and was known for singing favorites like “Amazing Grace” and “How Great Thou Art.” One of her favorite scriptures was Psalm 23: “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want...I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”
Joyce was preceded in death by her beloved husband, her three brothers, and grandson Nathan Austin.
Joyce is survived by her sister Laura Bryant and by Joyce’s children: Russell Scogin and wife Karoyn, James Scogin, and Karen Scogin Austin and husband Paul; also by grandchildren: Matthew Scogin and wife Angie, Mark Scogin and wife Andrea, Melissa Scogin Bobbitt and husband Jeremy, Amanda Munene and husband Michael, Joshua Austin, and Michael Austin and wife Jessica-Michelle, and by many nieces and nephews. Joyce’s legacy continues through her nine great-grandchildren: Kyndall, Lucas, Payton, Bradley, Avery, Bree, Jaxson, Jackson, and Ella-Kate—each cherished and a source of joy.
A celebration of Joyce’s life will be held at Cook-Walden Chapel of the Hills Funeral Home, 9700 Anderson Mill Road, Austin, TX 78750, on Wednesday, May 21st including visitation from 4:30-6:30 pm and service at 6:30 pm. A gathering of family and friends is planned at her gravesite at Hurst Ranch Cemetery the following morning at 11 am.
