
I met Kathy at the old, legendary Split Rail Inn one night in 1968. My memories are all from the fab '60s(which extended into the '70s here in Austin). Unlike flowers,  memories   stay fresh for decades.  And I especially remember the summer of 1969 and a place I lived at Hudson Bend on Lake Travis and Kathy riding up in her little red Fiat sportscar convertible.     Kathy was a staunch supporter of the Bold Marauders in the annual madcap softball game with the Zapatistas and active in many of the political doings of the time, such as the Radical Lawyers Caucus we thrust upon the State Bar Convention in 1970, and many others.      As a close personal friend, she could be trying at times and definitely had a Type A personality, but she was warm, generous and always ready to see the humor and upside of all situations.  We stayed in touch over the years and she worked in one of my law offices in the '90s.  Fittingly, the last time I talked to Kathy (who took pride in the Irish heritage that was something we had in common) was on St. Patrick's Day last year.  Her health had been ravaged but she sounded cheerful, as always, like it was a brand new semester.



Kathy was a good friend, and one of a handful of women who carried my political career around on their backs.  I always felt like I had to try to do the right thing because they could see more in me than I could see in myself and I wanted them to be right.    And there was always music where Kathy went.  When she wasn't officially managing a band there was always somebody she wanted you to give a listen to.  And she was, in my experience, right.  Rock-a-billy; jazz, folk-she just had good taste.    My son Paul and her daughter Renee were contemporaries, so I was always on the prowl for parenting advice.    I saw her before I left San Antonio in 2001, and I talked to her on the phone from Indiana last year.  I've been missing her since I heard the news.    Renee, Paul is deployed in the California desert training for his deployment to Iraq, and I am not sure he will get word before the memorial.    My thoughts are with you all.



Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal....      I grew up with rene and knew Kathy as a woman always on the go. I always thought she could do anything.  She welcomed everyone into her home and treated them like family. I always felt like an adopted daughter. I was fortunate to have known her and even more fortunate to know her wonderful daughter.  I am with you in spirit Rene. love you and miss you!      TY

Long time no see, my friend. I hate to hear about this but I'll never ever forget the midnight card games at Duke's. The tarot cards on Parker Lane. I always smile at these thoughts. Now you can really fly like the wind, girl. Have fun.



Dear Kathy:    Its only been a week since I lost you.  It seems like so much longer.  Ill never forget the fun we had, the counsel you gave, the help and support and companionship that you were always ready with.    You always knew what to say to make things seem a little less grim.  I wish I could ask you now what to do, what to say, how to feel.    I know that wherever you are now, Fred is nearby and your dear Mother.  I cant help but be happy for you.  I know how youve missed them.  But I wasnt quite ready to let you go yet, my dear.    I will never forget you.  Fair Sailing, my sweet Kathy!  Love, Marc



I ran into Kathy many times and many places, here in Austin.  We were not close friends, but she was a good friend.  I was always glad to see her and have a chance to talk with her, and I will miss her.
