Kathryn Ann Key, born July 12, 1957 in Big Spring, Texas, died on Friday, Feb. 3, 2017. She was the first daughter born to Lt. Norman and Beverly Key and the granddaughter of Joe and Rosalee Key of San Angelo and Hicks and Bessie Garner of Milam County
Kathy was 18 months old when she was diagnosed as being a "mongoloid", 5 years later referred to as "Down's Syndrome". Kathy developed into a very happy, healthy, wonderful young lady with a great personality and wonderful social skills. She attended public schools in Dover, DE, Orlando, FL, Lubbock and Austin, Texas. In 1981 Kathy graduated from Jerry Mac Clifton Center in Austin and was already employed as the first mentally challenged adult that McDonalds hired and her good work paved the way for many others to be employed.
Kathy was a great swimmer, winning many gold and silver medals in the Special Olympics State Swimming Meets. She loved life, including Special Stars, family, Church, her birthdays, Weddings, Christmas and Santa Claus.
Kathy became a well-adjusted young adult who never met a stranger. She has been a delightful blessing to all who knew her. As most Downs, Kathy had medical challenges, but our Lord carried her through nearly 60 years with the help of the best medical staff in the world. She had great faith in God and asked Jesus to come into her heart at the age of 12. Praying for others was a special privilege she enjoyed.
Kathy was preceded in death by her brother, David Key, 3 aunts, 4 uncles, 1 cousin and 4 grandparents. She is survived by her parents, her lovely, caring sister, Suzanne Pagan of San Marcos, 2 uncles, 2 aunts, 3 nephews, 1 niece and 17 cousins.
Visitation will be held on Wed., Feb. 8, 2017 at 10 AM, followed by the Celebration of her life at 11 AM at the Great Hills Baptist Church, 10500 Jollyville Road, Austin, Texas 78759. Interment will be at 3PM at the Sharp Cemetery in Milam County where she will be laid to rest among 5 generations of ancestors.
