Katherine May Sprouse Moore Mayhew Katherine May Mayhew was released from the trials and tribulations of this world into the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ at 10:15 am, Monday, September 19, 2005. She was born on the family farm at Spicewood, Texas on September 12, 1908, to John Birt and Julia Sprouse, and passed away 7days past her ninety-seventh birthday. Katie left the farm in 1924 at 16 years of age to work as housekeeper for the Dacys, who had a shoe store in Austin. She later worked at the Stephen F. Austin Hotel where she became acquainted with Thomas Gurth (Sam) Moore, who was hotel chef. They were married on September 14, 1927 at Buda, Texas. Two sons were born to this union; Thomas Clayton and Julian Wesley Moore. She became a young widow when Sam passed away from pneumonia on January 5, 1935. While working in Fort Worth, Texas, John Beldon Mayhew came to her aid, rescuing her from three men who were stalking her. They were married on October 5, 1937, in Fort Worth. They worked together in sales, later opening a restaurant at 29th and Guadalupe in Austin. A son was born to this marriage, Edward Lawrence Mayhew. J. B. and Katie were associated with several Business Schools, and were founders of the Bowling Green School of Business in Bowling Green Kentucky. In 1978, they retired and returned to Austin. Her husband, J. B. preceded her in death in January, 1982. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, John Willie, David and Dellman, Melvin and Samuel Sprouse; sisters, Mary Elizabeth and Julia Roberta Sprouse and Gladys Lindsey. She is survived by a brother, Clifford Sprouse; sons, Tom and Zula Fae Moore, Wesley and Linda Moore, and Edward Mayhew; grandchildren, Beverly Smith, Nathan Moore, Clay Moore, Carol Delatore, Janet Harvey, Duane Moore, Clint Moore, Kent Mayhew, Stanley Mayhew and Renee Harris; 25 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren, and a multitude of nieces and nephews. Katie was always ready to help where she was needed. She loved her family. Not only her sons and grandchildren, but also her nieces and nephews always knew they could count on "Aunt Katie." She assumed the role of "Mom" for a younger brother, Sam; and nephews Mike and Tom Lindsey when their mothers passed away. Her faith in God was unwavering. She enjoyed life and lived with confidence, never in fear or anxiety. The love she had for everyone in her family was pure and non-judgmental. She never dwelt on negative things -- never had a bad word about anyone. Her life was her testimony -- an example for all who knew her. Visitation will be held from 6:00 pm 8:00 pm on Thursday, September 22, at Wilke-Clay-Fish Funeral Home. Graveside service will be at 11:00 am on Friday, September 23, at Driftwood Cemetery.
