Kenneth Wayne Chapman was born on April 24, 1950, in Austin, Texas. He attended McCallum High School in Austin until he enlisted in the Marine Corps at the young age of 17. During his time at boot camp at Camp Pendleton, California, Kenneth was severely wounded, which led to his early retirement from the Marines. Despite this, he was honored with the Marksmanship Badge, Rifle, and the Good Conduct Medal in June 1967, retiring with the rank of E-2 in 1968.
After his military service, Kenneth dedicated many years as a state employee, ultimately retiring at the age of 62. Kenneth found joy in the simple pleasures of life, especially in spending time with his beloved wife, Shelagh Chapman. Together, they shared a deep love for their family and community.
Kenneth took great pride in watching his step-son, James Kenji Yukawa, a fellow McCallum graduate, excel in football during his high school and college years. A passionate Dallas Cowboys fan, he never missed a game and loved sharing his enthusiasm for the team with friends and family. He also had a special bond with his dogs, Sam and Taylor, and loved taking scenic drives through the Texas Hill Country. Kenneth and Shelagh both had a sweet tooth and enjoyed sharing cookies and donuts with their grandsons, Kenzo and Jacob Yukawa.
Kenneth was a devoted husband, father, son, brother, and uncle. He was preceded in death by his son Matthew, his father Ervin Sr., and his brothers Ervin Jr. and Dwain. He is survived by his loving mother Wilma, his step-son Kenji, his sisters Cindy, Karen, Donna, and Tina, and his brother Ronnie, as well as many cherished nieces and nephews.
In a poignant testament to their deep bond, Kenneth and his beloved wife Shelagh passed away on the same day, July 17, 2024. Kenneth and Shelagh will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved them. Their legacy of love, kindness, and resilience will continue to inspire and comfort their family and friends.
