The Austin community lost a good man on Monday. Walter Kevin Standish passed away following a tragic accident at his property in Elgin, Texas. Kevin was born January 7, 1961 at St. David's Hospital in Austin to Bobbie Harris Standish and Joe Harris. While a student at Anderson High School, Kevin moved in with Shirley and Larry McPhail, whom he came to call "mom" and "dad", appreciating their unconditional love and support. This closeness with the McPhail family continues through Kevin's death. Kevin graduated from Anderson High School in 1979, a member of the infamous "Wild Bunch." He served in the Marine Corp Reserve and attended The University of Texas at Austin, where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. It was at UT he meet his wife-to-be, Dedra Herbel of Plano. Their wedding on December 28, 1985 in Plano was the beginning of a happy, loving marriage, which ended much too quickly on Monday. Kevin was in the automotive repair business at Ellis and Salazar in Austin and later owned his own business, Suburbans R Us/Chevy Truck Specialists. At the time of his death, he was a successful real estate agent with Wiler and Associates. Family and friends consumed Kevin's time and energy, guiding his children: Hilary, a student at Abilene Christian University; Barrett, a student at Texas State University; and Broderick, a sophomore at Anderson High School in Austin with a firm but loving hand along side of his beloved wife. During their children's younger years, Kevin coached and served on the Board of the Balcones Little League where many young baseball players have surely been influenced positively by Kevin Standish. A man with a huge heart and a desire to help others, he was known to give his last nickel and shirt off his back to those in need. Kevin is survived by his devoted and loving wife Dedra and children Hilary, Barrett, and Broderick; father, Larry McPhail and wife Judy; sister and brother-in-law Edwina and Neal Worley; brother and sister-in-law Matt and Cheryl McPhail; nieces and nephews, Elizabeth and Kristin Worley, Meredith, Ryan and Caroline McPhail; aunt Karen Harris Brown; cousins Gabriel, Michael, and Kevin; and not to be forgotten, Duece, his German short-haired pointer. The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 18, from 6:00¬ to 8:00 pm at Weed-Corley-Fish, 3125 North Lamar. Services are at 11:00 am, Friday, October 19, at Westover Hills Church of Christ, 8332 Mesa Dr., with burial following at Austin Memorial Park Cemetery. A celebration of life will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Kevin Standish Memorial Fund at Prosperity Bank, c/o Brent Weber and Alleene Thrash, 1610 West North Loop Blvd, Austin, TX 78756. Phone # 512-407-6070
