Lester Lamar Lundell, 75, was born on August 19, 1947 to Maidel and Joe Lundell and went to be with the Lord on May 1, 2023. He delighted in living his entire life in the same community of East Austin, attending school at Maplewood Elementary, University Jr. High, and graduating from Austin High in 1965. A talented athlete, he excelled in Little League baseball, in basketball, quarterbacked in high school and then found his passion on the golf course. Lester was the only golfer to win Austin’s Junior, Men’s, and Senior Championships and later, five straight Austin Country Club championships.
He and his brother, Terry, grew up attending Decker Methodist Church every Sunday where they made lifelong friends with other kids from that close knit group of Swedish families. “Lumpy” was an avid sports fan preferring to watch in his own home so that he could be the sole operator of the remote control. He loved a good golf joke, his fellow golfers, reading the American Statesman, VERY sweet tea and dining at Luby’s. He shunned egotistical sportscasters, city politics, unwanted phone calls and new clothes.
On New Year's Day, 2015, Lester was given a second chance at life via a liver transplant. He was a model patient, rarely complained, and was motivated to return to “Mo Willie” golf course. He enjoyed 8 more years at play.
Preceding him in death are his parents, his brother, Terry, and his nephew David Lundell. He is survived by his sister-in-law Sue Lundell, nephew Mike Lundell and 5 great nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Decker UMC on Saturday, May 13th at 11:00 am. Memorials designated for the cemetary fund may be sent to Decker UMC, 8304 Decker Lane, Austin, TX 78724.
