It is with great sadness that the family of Lora Lynn Davis announces her death on March 20, 2022, in Austin, Texas. Lora Lynn was born on November 29, 1941 in Oak Cliff, a community in south Dallas, Texas. She was the oldest daughter of John Miller Davis and Edna Brownlee Davis. She graduated from Adamson High School in 1960 and was homecoming queen her senior year. After graduating high school, Lora Lynn attended Texas Tech University to study speech and psychology. She attended Tech for two years and then transferred to the University of Texas at Austin, where she became a member of Alpha Phi sorority and finished up her degree in 1964. At Texas she began dating Paul Van Slyke, and the two were married in July, 1964. After several years in Dallas they settled in Houston, where Lora Lynn welcomed her two beloved sons, Christopher Paul Van Slyke and Scott Allen Van Slyke. Lora Lynn was a devoted mother, and loved spending her time keeping up with the boys and their activities and always welcoming their friends.
Lora Lynn maintained a strong affiliation with her fellow Alpha Phis in Houston and was an active member of the Junior Forum for many years, frequently volunteering around Houston. She was active in her book club for 40 years, loved square dancing, and playing Bunco with friends. Interior decorating and design had been a passion for Lora Lynn, and so she embarked on a career in the field, which included working as a sales representative for F. Schumacher & Co. In 1999 Lora Lynn married Ron Ober, with whom she spent many happy years until Ron’s death in 2021. During her mother Edna’s last years she lived with Lora Lynn and Ron, who both provided a home with love and affection to Edna until she died at age 99. Lora Lynn was a dedicated and loving friend, an always-welcoming host, and the best pie maker around. She was a thoughtful and curious person, always open to new ideas, and she was generous to friend and stranger alike. Most of all, Lora Lynn loved her family, and they will miss her always.
Lora Lynn was preceded in death by her husband, Ron Ober, as well as her parents. She is survived by her sons and their families: Christopher and his wife, Klair, and children Katherine, Angelina, Christopher Jr., Victoria and Elizabeth of Jackson, Wyoming; and Scott and his wife, Laura, and children Madeleine and Bess of Austin, Texas. Lora Lynn loved being a grandmother and treasured her time with her grandchildren. Lora Lynn is also survived by her cherished sister, Johnny Beth Heidelberg, and Johnny’s husband, Jim, of Mason, Texas.
The family expresses special thanks to Janice Kromah, who was a loving caregiver for Lora Lynn and Ron in their later years.
In lieu of flowers the family welcomes donations in Lora Lynn’s honor to the charity of your choice.
