Lou Worthey Darling

Lou was born on January 27, 1931 in Gillett, Texas to SJ and Mattie Worthey. She worked hard her entire life. As a child her work was picking cotton. Later in life Lou worked at Kress’s Department Store in Austin. Lou married her love, Bobby Darling, on June 21, 1949 at Rosedale Baptist Church. Together they had a daughter, Louise. They shared many memories and together they helped grow a successful family business at Darling Cleaners in Austin, Texas for over 40 years. After the closing of Darling Cleaners, Lou loved every minute spent with her family. She soon had the urge to go back to work and found herself at Austin Independent School District where she worked for over 15 years.

Lou was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Austin, Texas. She was actively involved in the TLC group at Redeemer where she had many friends and enjoyed playing dominoes. She was always ready for a game of cards or dominoes. She was always ready to go! She loved family vacations, fishing, and any event where everyone got together. She was a big fan of The Price is Right and Wheel of Fortune.

Lou is preceded in death by her parents, SJ and Mattie Worthey, and seven siblings. She is survived by her husband of 72 years, Bobby Darling; her daughter, Louise Stubblefield and her husband Mike; her granddaughters, Melissa Frederick and Stacey Warren; her great-grandchildren, Katelyn and Korbin Frederick and Reagan Warren; her lifelong friend and caregiver, Diana Pernitza; and one sister, Ella Mae Lackey.

She was known by many as Memaw. She was the sweetest person you ever met and she will be missed by all that were lucky enough to know her.

A visitation will take place from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday, May 19th at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar Blvd., Austin, Texas, 78752. A Graveside service will be held the following day, Thursday, May 20th, at 2:00 P.M. at Austin Memorial Park, 2800 Hancock Drive, Austin, Texas, 78731.
