

Louise Charlotte Walthall Horton 1916-2005 Louise Walthall Horton passed away peacefully at Brighton Gardens on the evening of July 1, 2005. Louise was born in Granbury, Texas on June 23, 1916 as the first child of Moten Carl Walthall and Willie Belle Bryant. She was the oldest of five children. The children lost their mother when Louise was fourteen years old and moved to live with her fathers sister Cora Stone and her husband Robert Stone of Houston Texas. She graduated from San Jacinto High School in Houston and received a B. A. with a major in chemistry from Rice University in 1938. On November 23, 1938 she married Claude Wendell Horton, a classmate at Rice University. After raising their two children, Louise became an artist and a writer. She painted oil reproductions of famous French impressionist works and wrote novels, poems and essays. Her biography of Samuel Bell Maxey was published by the University of Texas Press. Louise was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Claude, her sister Dorothy Hill, and her brother Carl Walthall. She is survived by her sister Martha Bocock of Kerrville, Texas, and her brother William Walthall of North Carolina. Louise is survived by her son Wendell and his wife Elisabeth of Austin and her daughter Margaret Elaine Morefield of Arlington, Texas. She is survived by her grandson John and his wife Johauna and their children Jaclyn, Jayna, and Joseph of Santa Barbara, California, and her grandson Mike and his wife Melissa and their daughter Mica of Santa Clara, California, and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff at Brighton Gardens and at the Renaissance for the kind and attentive care. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 5, 6:00 to 8:00pm at the Weed Corley Fish funeral home at 3125 N. Lamar. The funeral service will be held on July 6, 10:00am at First English Lutheran Church at 3001 Whitis Avenue. Burial will be in the Weir Cemetery in Weir, Texas.
