Lucille was a special mom and grandmother. When Lucille walked into a room, everyone knew when she had arrived due to her infectious laughter. She was known for her sweet, gentle, caring spirit and was always thinking of others first. She kept the cookie jar well stocked. Ice cream was always in the freezer with a spoon in it. Her favorite donut was a sour cream cake donut. Her morning project was reading the newspaper to work the crossword puzzle. Her cursive handwriting was exceptional. Afternoons were filled with Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. Evenings were the Hallmark channel.
Lucille's passion was spoiling her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her first grandchild was born on her birthday. For each child's birthday she made a customized cake especially for them. She enjoyed cooking so it was always a treat to "go to granny's" for a meal. She was an excellent seamstress and made prom dresses, Halloween costumes, poodle skirts, and matching dresses. She made garters for all her granddaughters' weddings.
She enjoyed working in her flowerbeds, visiting with friends, and serving others. She had a collection of butterfly jewelry pins that she frequently wore on her clothing. Butterflies were on her walls, lamps, butterfly pillow shapes, pillow cases, and flags. If one were to wonder what to get Lucille, one was safe to get her some sort of butterfly.
Grandson-in-law Joseph Justiss composed a beautiful poem in Lucille's honor:
Matthew 13:43 Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father.
Lucille, Lady of Light
Lucille, Lucille, Lady of Light,
Woman of wonder she.
Marv'ling at many a butterfly
Blooming flowers in colors bright,
Now gardens in heaven's country.
Lucille, Lucille, Lady of Light,
Mother of many she.
Guiding, serving, spoiling us all
Kids and grandkids, in blood or law.
Rich in generosity.
Lucille, Lucille, Lady of Light,
Bride adorned now she.
Gaze transfixed on heaven's Son
Shining like the noonday sun.
Kingdom... crown... glory.
