I am genuinely distraught over the news of Monsieur Prevost's passing and am sending my deepest condolences, even though years have gone by. Marc Prevost was my French I and II professor at ACC before I moved onto major in French at UT Austin, ended up studying abroad in Paris, and now live in France definitively. Mr. Prevost's foundational French was an integral part of my language acquisition journey. Today I can happily say I'm bilingual and it all started with Mr. Prevost. I'm an English professor nowadays to French natives and I often tell a funny anecdote about one of my interactions in class with Mr. Prevost, and also employ some of his pedagogical strategies in my own teaching methodology. Mr. Prevost was such a huge part of all of this, and I wanted to send him an email to update him and say thank you. My husband is French and my now 2-year old son is half French and half American, my life has since become completely intertwined with French and France... and it really did all start in the ACC classrooms of French I and II with Marc Prevost. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart for playing a bigger role in all of your students' lives than you could possibly imagine. You were one of my favorite and by far on of the best educators in my entire education. May you rest in peace.

It’s been 4 years since I took French with M. Prevost—one short semester of my life—and I still find myself thinking about him now and again. And not just because he looked exactly to me like Balin from the Hobbit movies! I had to take Introductory French 3 times before I passed it—at St. Edward’s, ACC, and UT—and M. Prevost was by far the best professor I ever had. He had a wonderful disposition and a true talent for teaching, and I miss him very much.  

I just found out Monsieur Prevost passed away. It breaks my heart but I'm grateful to have taken his French class. I had a great time learning French with him and he had such a passion to teach this language. 
You'll be missed!

Monsieur Prevost was an amazing instructor. My family will be moving overseas and learning French. I wanted to look him up for some tips. To my shock, I read the news. My heart goes out to the family and friends. I would study with him after class. He took a liking to me because I wanted an A. He was firm and fair. Still after 16 years since I studied with him, I remember his lessons. His best piece of advise- you must think in French. I knew him but for a short time but he was impacting where many other instructors and professors, I forgot their name. His lessons live on and I will teach them to my daughter.

Marc, you were that rarest of creatures, a genuinely honest and good man. I was just a weird, troubled kid in your class yet you always treated me with respect and kindness, and invited me into your office on more than one occasion to speak at length on learning and life. I still retell your stories, and they never fail to get a laugh. You leave a legacy of love, kindness and laughter ... there is no greater accomplishment in this life. Rest well, mon ami. I genuinely hope we meet again someday, somewhere, somehow.

I took French II at Austin Community College. Always witty and knowledgeable, he made his classes engaging and fun. He always had interesting stories to tell about French society and culture. He would always speak fondly of his family. Mr Prevost valued interesting material, and would reward students for going the extra mile in making their work not only fulfill assignment requirements, but also making said work compelling as writing. A fantastic instructor, and a great person, Marc Prevost will be missed by all those he taught, myself included. My sympathy and condolences to his family; we have lost in him one of our best.

My deepest sympathies to the family for their loss.  Marc was one of the first people I met when working at HRW in the foreign language department.  He had the kindest and most gentle personality and patience beyond belief.  We sat directly across from each other and it was never a dull moment.  He was funny, witty, charming and so full of life with everyone.  He was passionate about the French series he was working on and took the time to explain everything in great detail.  Our paths took different directions both in and out of the company and he returned to teaching- we lost touch, but the memories are still awesome of the man who loved French, people, funny stories and most of all his family.  He always had great stories and pictures of his family.  My heart is sad for the loss, but full with great memories.  Bon voyage Marc!

Marc was a gifted and engaging educator who greatly influenced me both as a small boy and formally as a young man in college. His intellect and classroom presence commanded the respect of his students and his warm disposition and gentle sarcasm could charm anyone with a sense for kindness and honesty.

I wish to convey my sincerest condolences to Laura, Andrew and Annick. Having your husband and father in my life has truly been an inspirational lesson in worldliness and distinction, and I am fortunate to have been within his sphere of influence for so long.
 
Although I wish him well on this new journey which he has embarked, I will miss him and will always hold dear his memory.

Marc was one of the first people who welcomed me to the college. He was an incredibly warm, friendly, kind, gracious and genuine person. Marc always made me feel welcomed, valued, and respected. He was one of those rare individuals whose eyes truly twinkled whenever he spoke of the things that brought him joy--like his family--or impassioned him--like teaching. I am deeply grateful that I had the opportunity to work with him. While there is little I can say to assuage the sorrow of this loss to those who loved him most, I hope you can find some solace in the knowledge that I am just one among many who can attest to the fact that Marc made a difference in their life. Our world is a more loving and intelligent place for his beautiful, sanguine spirit having graced it. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

 Marc was one of my favorite persons at ACC. We had many discussions by the copier, in the hall, on the street, and in my office. He was one of the nicest guys ever to walk on planet earth. I often advised students to take French from him. He was loved by his students and is irreplaceable.  Sincere condolences to his family.

Thank you for being one of my favorite professors ever. It meant a lot to me when you'd hold me after class to talk about life. You motivated me to do well in school and I will continue to do so thanks to you. Merci pour tout Marc et que Dieu soit avec toi.

La creme de la creme--that was Marc Prevost to me from the time I used to work in the foreign language department at ACC.
Marc, was the best professor and fully dedicated to his students, and always doing the best. He was the best friend at work and off work--always the best.

Marc as a friend was the best entertainer, imitating various voices to read a joke and make you laugh until you would cry. Yes, he was even good at that. He appreciated everything around him.

Marc was one of the first editors I hired when I started managing the HRW foreign language team. He was unwaveringly dedicated to excellence in every project he worked on, and I was very disappointed when he eventually left our publishing team for his true love--teaching. We missed his skill and knowledge of pedagogy, but more than that we missed his warmth and impish smile and sense of humor. My condolences to Laura and his children, and my thanks to Marc for having shared his skills and his love of life with us all.

I met Marc for the first time face to face in 2011. I had heard of him before through the French teaching grape wine, especially as the author of the Horizons textbook. I was studying to become a French teacher, second career for me, and I asked if I could observe him teach. Wow!  Un grand pro !!! We met at parties chez Vero Dupond after that and spoke.  What a kind man!  
His students will miss him, we'll miss him.  What a shame to go so early. 
To his children: you can be very proud of your dad. He was a great guy.

I have been stunned, shaken all weekend.  Marc, have you been all these years secretly
one of the three princely magi "still proceeding, following yonder star".  We have had such glorious, magical conversations outside our classrooms and my office in the basement hallway of the Rio Grande campus.  Let's continue to rendezvous.

My sympathy to Marc's family and friends, here and abroad, extended to students and those who have had the pleasure and honor of knowing him, his spirit for all things French, his love of life and his spirit of adventure will live in our memories. I had nothing but respect for Marc.  He was, simply, one of the best teachers at Austin Community College, smart and dedicated to the highest ideals of what a college education should be, but kind and generous of spirit and time.   We are less for Marc's passing.  His presence set a high bar for us all.  We should honor him by never forgetting his dedication and by trying to live up to his example.  I will miss you, Marc.

When I think of Marc, the word passion practically leaps from the dictionary of possible descriptors. Whatever he said, whenever he said it, one could feel the passion driving the words. And his greatest passion was for the people in his life, be they students, friends or family. I envy that love and can say with the deepest certainty that he made the world a better place and made those of us who were blessed to know him better people. May all who mourn his passing take comfort that through his impact on us, Marc will continue making the world better.

Mr. Prévost was the first French teacher I ever had when I started studying the language at ACC during the summer while I was still in high school.

Thanks to Marc's enthusiasm and warm teaching style, I fell in love with the language and went on to double major in French and International Relations in college, during which time I spent a semester in Normandy and returned to Paris for some internships two years later.

Now, ten years after taking Marc's French 101 class, I'm in the process of researching and applying to graduate school in Paris to become a conference interpreter. He truly had an impact on the direction of my life, and I believe I would not have adopted the French language and culture so enthusiastically without his mentorship.

Marc Prevost by his presence and comments, his keen sense of a wider world than the halls of ACC, or Austin, even perhaps his native France, brought to those who knew him an elevation of the spirit. He spoke often of his wife and children and his love of French and things French and cheered all those with whom he visited. A truly exceptional human being who will not be forgotten for those fortunate enough to know him. I was preparing to teach in a classroom at RGC when Mark stopped by, saw the piano, sat down and began to play something. The expected and unexpected came to fruition in Marc Prevost. Marc was an inspiration to me as a teacher.  I will remember you Marc as a very kind, wise, witty man.  After I moved to HLC and didn't see you very often, I was so happy to get some time with you after FOLA meetings and talk about our kids.  Thank you for all your advice!  Last spring, after I shared my daughter's interest and love for animals, I discovered Marc "a vet".
May you rest in peace.  We will meet again and "there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the former things have passed away.

A beautiful human being has departed from this Earth--and we will miss him. But he left his mark--all of us who knew him, in whatever capacity, will never forget him. He touched many lives, with his beautiful smile, his caring spirit, his intelligence and wit. Those things will live on in our hearts and minds--and that's how we keep him with us.  By remembering.

Even now I can hear Marc gently correcting my pronunciation as he did so often in the faculty mail room at Austin Community College as we chatted about French history and politics.  Me, the math guy, who knew just enough French to be dangerous. Marc, a delightful colleague and friend.  We last chatted a few weeks ago when he made a special trip to my third floor office to inquire of my well-being, knowing that I was still grieving for my wife's passing a year ago.  And now I grieve for him, a tear even as I write this. I am stunned.  He was, indeed, as others here noted, the kindest and gentlest of people.  I will miss sitting in on his French classes, as I told him I would do in retirement. I never met his family but know their grief must be great at the loss of such a special son, husband, and father.  Mes sinceres condoleances a votre doleur.

I will miss having Marc across the hall from me. From the wafting classical music to the discussions of education and the right thing to do, Marc was an inspiration and a friend.

Marc, I will miss working with you, talking to you, learning from you, and having you as a friend.

Marc Prévost - A Tribute

It was just last fall that my wife and I ran into Marc Prévost in the parking lot at the Rio Grande campus of Austin Community College. He seemed his usual cheerful, thoughtful and apparently healthy self.  So it was that much more a surprise when we heard he was ill.  Moreover, I had a Spanish class on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, right before his evening French class in the same classroom in the 3000 building. His sub told me that Marc had told him that he would only be needed for a couple of weeks.  Those couple of weeks turned into until Halloween, then until Thanksgiving and finally until the end of the semester. Still, the news of his passing yesterday, the eve of the feast of the Three Wise Men, came as such a shock that I have hesitated to pen these lines, as if somehow not writing them would keep that final act at bay, at least in my own mind.
Now they have to be written, as I remember Marc Prévost.
I remember Marc the teacher whose extensive, multicolored packets on French grammar and vocabulary were so prized by his students that I had to ask him to send me some for a class I taught that followed one of his.  
I also remember Marc the teacher when I think of the student of his that I tutored at the Rio Grande Learning Lab.  Like so many of our overextended ACC students, this mother of three was working, tending to her husband and family and taking several courses.  Tearfully, she told me that she was going to have to drop Marc's class as she had failed the first few quizzes.  I tried to console her, fully expecting her to drop, but lo and behold she showed up at the lab again, this time radiant as she gotten over a 90 on her last test, thanks to Marc's perseverance and confidence in her ability to do well in his course. 
I remember Marc the author, not only for the widely successful Horizons, but also for those crazy little packets which guided his students step by step through the complexities of French grammar and vocabulary.  
I also remember Marc the author when he was employed by Holt, Rinehart & Winston, the publishing house whose Austin editorial staff foresaw what a valuable contributor Marc would be.
I remember Marc the husband when I would see him and his wife, Laura,  at a French movie at the Arbor Theatre in north Austin.  
I remember Marc the father as he always showed such concern for his children, woking extra hours to ensure their financial well-being.   One time he called me in my capacity as the coordinator in the schools over an issue that concerned one of them.  Marc cared deeply for his children.
I remember Marc the Frenchman who was so proud of his French and Italian heritage.  Marc Prévost came to represent la belle France for countless generations of students at Austin Community College.  Marc also stood as the wise voice from France at faculty meetings for us his colleagues in the foreign language department.  I remember Marc the colleague who knew so many people outside the department.
I remember Marc Prévost the friend whose conversations at the copier on the second floor of the main building of the Rio Grande campus could turn lengthy, making me forget where I was in my copying, but never Marc.
I remember Marc Prévost.

I will remember Marc as the epitome of excellence in teaching.  He was liked, admired, and respected by his students, and his colleagues.  Marc
had a kind and friendly demeanor, and it was evident that he enjoyed
teaching.

Professor Prevost inspired us, the students, to excel in everything we pursue. We learned a beautiful language and much more the values that make us better human beings. From hard work and discipline, modesty and kindness to intellectual curiosity and respect for other cultures.
His classes were an amazing, yet hard-to-find blend of French and life lessons, sparkled with fun and intellectual challenges. 
But more importantly, he inspired us by example. It is hard to believe that the extra work and materials Mr. Prevost was dedicating to each and every of his classes didn't take time away from his family. Therefore, we, the many generations of inspired students, should be grateful to his wife and children. My deepest condolences to you.

Marc was a friend and colleague and mentor.  I will always remember him as the personification of all the French words we associate with those who have  class: élan, savoir faire, panache, bon vivant, joie de vivre, boulevardier  in a word, un gentilhomme.

Marc I will miss hearing classical music coming from your office, but most of all, I will miss you my friend.

Dear Marc, Hi Friend. Thank you for many things. Thank you for your friendship over many years. Thank you for your smiles and your laughter. Thank you, also, for your passion for teaching and for excellence, and for sharing your passion for the French language and culture. You made a big difference for all your students, your colleagues, and your friends.

Marc has been my colleague for the past 15+ years.  I will always remember him as the great and inspiring teacher and the sweet and caring person that he always was.
