Gwen passed away quickly and comfortably at age 89 after a brief illness. She was a proud and independent woman born to John and Agnes (Morgan) Durstine in Mt. Eaton, Ohio. She was raised on a farm until she left at age 16 to live with relatives in the city. She later continued her education at St. Luke’s Nursing School in Cleveland. Graduation from nursing school had a lasting influence on many aspects in her life.
She met a soldier named Warren while serving as a registered nurse in the Women's Army Corps and they were married for the next 67 years. During the multiple moves required by military life and the associated absences of her husband, Gwen always ensured their family had a warm and comfortable home that was filled with love.
Gwen achieved success through hard work, amazing resourcefulness, and sheer tenacity. She expected the same of others. Gwen enjoyed gardening and was maintaining their yard until this past summer when she finally agreed to hire a lawn service.
Gwen loved her family. She instilled values and morals, and she taught her children the importance of choice. She encouraged her children to use their minds and to contribute to the goodness in life.
Gwen was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, William and Paul, whom she loved dearly. She was heartbroken that they were taken from this world too soon.
Gwen is survived by her loving husband Walt, children and their spouses Bob (Joni), Mike (Judy Avery), Karen (Keith Hutchison), Patti, Linda (Charlie Bunker), Judy, and Susan (Sherman Ray); grandchildren Chris, Tim, Brent, Cecily, Kevin, Kirtus, Kaleb, Kyle, Hilary, Jason, Jenni, Nathan, Noah, Sam and Ben; 15 great-grandchildren and still counting. Gwen was most proud that all of these strong-willed people enjoy each other and that her appreciation of family was passed along.
Mom asked that her family not mourn her and instead, celebrate her life. As requested, her ashes will be scattered in Estes Park and her family will have a party to celebrate her life.
For those who desire to make a memorial contribution, Gwen’s favorite charities were Austin Smiles and various organizations that support U.S. veterans.
