She was an adored wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a dear friend to many.
Maria Lopez Uballe was born on September 12, 1936, to Arcadio and Francisca Lopez. She was raised and attended school in Lytle, Texas. She was one of six sisters and three brothers. Her family were migrant workers, and they would travel to Illinois to pick asparagus and Wisconsin to pick cherries. One summer she traveled to West Texas with her sister to pick cotton. While there she met and fell in love with the love of her life, Johnny R. Uballe. They married and moved to Austin, Texas raising five children. Before his passing in 2011, they celebrated their 50th anniversary by renewing their vows. Johnny and Mary spent a total of 52 years together in wedded bliss.
Mary and Johnny worked together at Communication Specialist Inc. (formerly Texas Mailing and Printing Company), for over 45 years and were able to retire together. Ms. Mary (a nickname given to her by her coworkers at CSI) was a strong lady and her warmth, humor and wisdom left a lasting impact on everyone she encountered. She had a quick wit about her and was always ready with a come-back. Her hobbies and interests included working on puzzles, watching football and baseball, and gardening. Mary’s family always looked forward to her delicious tamales. She would let the family know when it was time to make tamales, and everyone would gather at her home. Fun was had by all being together and reminiscing about earlier days.
Ms. Mary lived a remarkable life. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and friends that she had touched in some way throughout her memorable life. Her legacy is one of love, dedication and service. She was a blessing to many, and her memory will be cherished.
May her memory bring comfort to those she leaves behind.
